Car repair cheap deals.

2,209 133 February 3, 2018 at 10:44 AM
We often talk about how to get a product for cheapest on this site. What about car repairs?

I got some work to get done according to Pep Boys on my brakes totaling $900+. Yikes!!!

Check out the price - https://imgur.com/a/W0Hv1

Any ideas who would fix it for much cheaper?

Appreciated!

try taking your car to a small garage, explain what you want done (i.e. read off the pep boys estimate) and see if they can give you an estimate of the work that needs to be done.

or, just give them the estimate and see how much cheaper they can do it for.

A friend of mine years ago had a Ford Tempo. The front wheel bearings always gave out. You had to have them pressed off and on the hub. It was $500 each side. I helped him take it off and take the hub to a machine shop where it was still around $200 a side. Sometimes you just pay for convenience. I am not sure what exactly they are doing in that estimate. Usually the mom and pop shops are cheaper, but they were charging $90 an hour in a little town in Oklahoma where I was living. I thought that was pricey but people used them quite a bit.

For my cars, I just buy good (or best) OEM parts from advanceautoparts or autozone and take them to local mechanic.

My biggest pain been, to find reliable mechanic. You should be able to get brakes replaced, under $400. And replace whole brakeset.. not just pad.

I would question whether you actually need any of that work done with anything from Pep Boys who are well known for padding the bill and doing un-needed work.

Try RepairPal.com, not going to get the cheapest but you'll get decent price at decent shops (YMMV) or check out yelp and call around.

those are major repairs! I would get a second opinion elsewhere as it seems odd that tie rods and wheel bearings are all shot at once.

If your car is more than 10 years old and those repairs are needed, I'd consider abandoning ship.

Another thing to do, depending on where you live, is to go to a more urban area and check the spots around there. I'm around a spanish area and get some great deals on work. negotiating works well, too. but you should know what you're talking about.
