Not throwing off on the product, but from experience with the Acurite $50 to $80 units, a sensor or something is probably going to go bad in a year or two. Just keep that in mind when buying. I have an Acurite sensor that includes the wind speed (probably an $80 or so product), and after 2 years it's getting a little unstable. My Aunts have had 2 of the $40-$50 units with just the exterior sensor to measure the temperature and humidity, and theirs go out after about a year or so.

I like Acurite products but there are a few caveats about this unit. It is not true color, it is a monochrome LCD display with a color template. It also does not have the PC Connect feature so you will not be able to upload your weather data to Weather Underground. The internal fan has been known to fail on the outdoor sensor array. The unit will still work but the outdoor temperature will spike when exposed to sunlight. Also, the forecast is based on a proprietary Acurite algorithm that takes at least two weeks to "learn" local conditions. If you have to remove the batteries, the learning process has to start all over again. I recommend running the barometer in manual mode.

The display is the killer for me. They always show these images with a big, bright, high-contrast colorful display but in reality it looks a lot more like this [staticflickr.com].

Since you seem to have a good deal of experience with these units, can you perhaps suggest an alternative with better features? I've had trouble finding reliable information on thia kind of equipment.

If you are in the market for one of these, include Kohls in your price check. Sometimes their coupons can make for a really great deal. I got a similar model through Kohls almost 2 years ago and I love it.

I have a pro unit and like it. Only thing is the wind isn't accurate at all. You need to put it way up high for an accurate wind. However if it's too high it shakes which causes false rain as the rain bucket will tip.

In my experience using both brands, La Crosse products didn't last as long as Acurite's. A lot of La Crosse products I have had failed even within warranty and their tech/warranty support was terrible/non-existent. Some Accurite products that I have had failed after their 1-year warranty, which still sucks - I know, but that was what they wrote up their agreement to which we agreed when we bought their stuff. Some of their products failed after 2 years while others are still functioning after a couple years. Never got to use their tech/warranty support, though.

Moral of the story: Buy from Sam's or Costco where you can return it at any time.

We've used a few Davis units - including the Vantage Pro2; however, these tend to be a fair bit more expensive than the Accurite units. The The Pro2 is going on 10 years with zero issues, and connected to Weather Underground See it here:

If you're interested in a station that will report to Weather Underground or other sites, WUnderground has a good source here:

This one looks nearly identical to the 1014M (which is smartphone and WUnderground compatible). Does anyone know if this one is smartphone or WUnderground compatible?
