Not a bad deal. I am sick and tired of TaxAct price gouging game and will not pay $100+ for TurboTax or H& Block. Since I file 2 states and my income is too high for any of the "Free" offers by other vendors, this was my cheapest option.

At FreeTaxUSA my Federal was free (You don't need to go for Deluxe), and I had to pay $23.30 AC for both states.
One issue I faced though was their "new" PDF import feature. If you skip the Prior Year PDF import step when you first sign up, there is no way to go back to it unless you sign-up for a new account. Pretty dumb bug, and I hope they fix it for coming years.

Another alternative is freetax.com but their bad reviews online made me reluctant to provide my personal information.

when it's about your most sensible information stick to what works even if it's $100

and you can deduct the $100

That's exactly why I didn't go for DIY taxes (freetax.com) although it is completely free because I did some research and found that their BBB profile is riddled with complains and their parent company is already facing federal Tax Fraud charges.

On the other hand, Freetaxusa and their parent company TaxHawk seem to be legit; They are ranked A+ on BBB, and they are also listed on the IRS website.

There is always the risk of the website being compromised by hackers, but even credit bureaus and giant corporations were hacked before.

As post above notes- freetax guys have a good rep...

Also as an FYI- no, you can't deduct the $100. They killed that deduction in the tax reform bill they passed in December.... you can still deduct whatever you paid last year from the 2017 return, but you won't be able to deduct whatever you pay this year to do your 2017 return.

I moved from Taxact to FreeTaxUSA a couple of years ago and have been happy with the site.

thanks guys. I refused to pay taxact 3x price increase. FreeTaxUSA was just as good as taxact. I liked the flow of taxact better but you can easily get used to FreeTaxUSA coming from taxact. You can also import your PDF taxact PDF into this software. It's good enough for my needs! Thanks for saving me a ton!

Just filed using this. There was little glitch with PTC and how it's applied to medical expenses. But otherwise good experience.

First time trying it this year, UI is fairly straightforward to use - with maybe a bit less assistance compared to TaxAct but sufficient for my situation (salary income + mortgage).

FWIW I've literally been using these guys since 2007. They used to have coupons for nearly free state returns but I haven't seen those in the last 3-4 years probably. If you ask if I'm happy with them... I have had zero issues in a decade, it's nice to have alll my returns in one place, and I laugh whenever someone says they paid $100+ to use one of the major tax prep software packages (stupidity tax). I can't say they'll always be good but they're good now!

I had to do a multi-state tax return this year.
My usual TaxAct was going to be over $60.
H&R Block was going to be free for federal + both states but my federal return got rejected with no reason why and they wanted me to print and mail in my returns.
I wanted to avoid the inconvenience of that even if it meant paying a little something.
Tried FreeTaxUSA today and federal + both state returns were accepted within an hour.

We used to use HR Block for 10+ years. Got tired of them jacking up the prices for their eState returns. Switched to FreeTaxUSA for the past two years and check against the HR Block engine. Both times the amounts were the same.

Received my returns both years in a timely manner. FreeTaxUSA is legit and only cost ~$11 instead of >$50 for HR Block. Will continue to use them in the future.

Yeah, I used Credit Karma this year for girlfriend using FreeTaxUSA for myself since CreditKarma doesn't support schedule K1. I previously used Taxact since about 2006 or so but they got too greedy.
