Help me put together a new computer...

6,933 2,270 February 7, 2018 at 01:00 PM
I used to post here frequently a few years ago, was super up to date with all the new tech and trends, but I'm out of the loop now. I'm trying to spend $6-800 on computer components, with the focus being on light gaming (Rocket League, etc), general use, and light photo editing.

I have a Microcenter nearby.

Start with the sites below for suggestions. You don't need much for Rocket League, integrated graphics will do the job.

I was posting here in hopes that, given the nature of this forum, that people would post links for deals whilst still recommending parts.

If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.

If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life.

If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore).

PC parts picker olis pretty good at finding deals, rebates etc. Not price mistakes. Mid and high end gpu are super hard to get right now due to mining.

Do you already have a windows OS key? that'll be a big factor for your budget.

What form factor are you looking for? That'll impact what components will fit.

What more do you want from your pc other than rocket league? as stated before, a cheap gpu or integrated graphics will do, which makes it questionable whether or not you should really build your own.

There's a lot of factors and no one is going to walk you through in this thread as you know what you want best. Do what I did, look at all the threads for specific components and gaming laptops/desktops. Read what people are discussing. Most of the info is spot on. For more specific stuff, e.g. case and fans, and thermal paste, you should be looking at the reddit and pcpartspicker forums.

this. I built my mid-tier gaming desktop about 3 years ago. I had an inkling that I wasn't saving much money by building my own rig but I wanted to have some bragging rights and complete control of all of my components in case I wanted to customize it in the future.

since then, I've seen countless gaming machines more powerful and cheaper that what I paid for, not to mention many of them were laptops.

Are you dead set on building or would you prefer to just get a pre-built computer from Microcenter?
