These drives use smr. It is like shingles in a house. If you want to replace one you have to modify adjacent ones. Therefore this could lead to more errors and decrease performance.

Great price for the capacity. $30 cheaper than the recent WD 8TB deal.

Exactly. That's why it's called "archive," It's more for one or very infrequent writes of data for long term storage. Definitely not for running an operating system or for continuing rewrites.

I agree if the drive is an archive one but they changed it.

But thats not how they are branding the external enclosure they put the archive drive in. They brand the external as a 'expansion' as in 'go ahead and use this as you would a internal hard drive without having to pop open your computer case'. There is no defence for that, and i am very glad they now come with the good drives.

Got one of them. Inside was this drive:
ST8000DM004-2CX188 (WCT0A9L4)
It is 5425 RPM drive with 256MB cache.
Shucked it. Put my old Seagate 2TB inside of the case, it is compatible.
Pretty happy with the purchase for now.
Getting two more to replace two of 3TB WD Blues.

I see Newegg wants you to sign up for Shoprunner to get 2 day shipping, otherwise you wait 4-7 days.No thanks.

And I was this close to buying from them again.

Shoprunner is free if you have an AMEX card. Also I think there was a paypal deal for 1 or 2 year free shoprunner.
