In my opinion the worst part of this deal is that you have to switch to the new "unlimited" plan. The last gen plans, especially with multiple lines, are cheaper as long as you aren't an extremely heavy data user. We have 18 GB for five lines and it's like $180. 5 x unlimited lines is what? $260?

Yup plus no corporate discount on unlimited plans. Verizon is making even more money and providing throttled speeds unless it's the go beyond unlimited at an even higher price!

The best part is that Verizon spent almost a decade convincing everyone that Unlimited was useless after they ended the program. Now they have spent the last two years telling everyone how awesome unlimited is and how much we need it. Verizon is a terrible, terrible company with good cell service. ↵

With our plan, they said $250 a month for 8 lines.

At no point is unlimited worth it if you have a 'normal' plan that serves you well.

The sales rep I spoke with tried to tell me I could add it for two months and then switch it back, but I have no desire to pay an extra $500 just to get a semi-decent phone deal. Plus, as others mentioned, you need a new line.

My wife and I both need phones, were on the medium plan with my 2 kids.
If I cancel one of my kids lines, then get this deal if I figured it right. I'll give him the new line, transfer it to my wife's old phone since he just killed his phone. I just have to go unlimited, and pay the 28.00 for the phone, I also have to go paperless to save another 20.00 . It would end up costing 40.00 more for 2 phones and I'll be on unlimited data.
If all works out this may be better than the best buy 18.00 per phone since I'll be getting unlimited for a few more dollars. Am I way off on my thinking?

Well, figure out what your bill will be going up every month and multiply it by 24. If that's less than the cost of the second phone, that's good. if it's more, it's bad. Right?
