Looking for something to store movies/video to watch on iPad and/or Android tablet

So, there must be something that does what I'm looking for but I don't know what it is called. I'm looking for something on which I can download movies I rent from Google Play or iTunes and then hook up to either my iPad (2017) or Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab A) to watch. Something like a flash drive but I don't think that would work for these tablets. I could plug into my laptop to download or either of the tablets.

I hope I'm explaining this right. Any ideas?

You could get a NAS (network attached storage). I have all my movies on my Synology NAS and use the Synology App on my iPad to view all my movies.

I should have been clear that I want to take this with me when I travel. I don't think I can take a NAS on the plane! The flight attendants may frown upon that.

The Synology app allows you to download the movies saved on your NAS, locally to your device. I download a couple movies for the plane ride to keep the kids occupied. I can also stream the movies directly to my device from anywhere I have wifi (or cellular if your tablet has it).

Your Android tablet probably has a microSD slot you can use to expand storage. You probably can't download movies on your laptop and copy them over due to DRM, but Google Play on the tablet should let you download to the microSD.

Thank you. That's what I usually do. I was just hoping there was a way to download directly to a flash drive type device and then be able to plug into either or both the tablet.
