I understand blaming the emperor, the government, and the military, and maybe even civilians who supported the war, but can you honestly blame the children? This is coming from someone who is very opposed to Japanese conservatives who deny the atrocities of WWII.

We don't tolerate cheering of American children hurt or homeless as a result of Vietnam or Iraq, so why point the finger at Japanese children?

I've seen this three times in my life. Each time it destroyed me.

We've had several great threads on this movie. I like how one poster described it as "The greatest movie you'll only watch once." I thought it was going to be an anti-US screed when I first watched it, and was surprised in that it really was a tragedy that shows where so many of the casualties come from in a war torn country, which is when people stop caring about anyone else. Not that the bombs and bullets don't kill, but the highest number of deaths come from the disintegration of the norms that tie a people together.

As an observation of cultural differences, it was originally released along with My Neighbor Totoro. That's just a very, very different pairing than you would ever see in the US. Nono

One of the finest Hayao films with anti-war theme. However, Japanese brought the war to themselves. That is why people watch it only once. You feel something is wrong. This film does not depict well enough why they are suffering. The perpeturator is playing the victim.

Coming from a country that was invaded by Japan, I say I could care less on how torn they were from the war they created.

Not made by hayao. Studio Ghibli, yes. Hayao, no.
