Arlo VMS4530-100NAS Arlo Pro 5-Camera System $649

Amazon has the 5 camera Arlo Pro system priced down to $649.00 (typically closer to $800 in the recent past). Note, these are NOT the Arlo Pro 2 cameras, so they are the older generation, but still a very good deal.

The biggest differences are that the Pro 2 is 1080p while the Pro is 720p. The Pro 2 can also be set to record non-stop and you can set up activity zones, but both of these features are only available when the camera is plugged in, so you lose the wire-free aspect at that point. Other than that, the two systems are pretty much the same.

$650 / 5 cameras -> $130

Hi Hocaspocas,

Note the 1080p cameras give a greater ID distance..

Arlo Pro / Arlo Go / Netgear Flexpower HD camera 720p at 130 degress: 5.644 feet { 36.12 sq feet covered }
..
Arlo Q / Arlo Q plus 1080p at 130 degrees: 8.47 feet { 81.34 sq feet covered }
Arlo Pro 2 1080p at 130 degrees: 8.47 feet { 81.34 sq feet covered }

This is theoretical based on H FOV and H resolution and 100 ppf, in practice the range is reduced - especially at night.

Ref: This is where I have the most updated ID distance listing

I've used these arlo pros for over a year and they have been fantastic for my needs. Regardless of your opinion it's a good deal.

I don't understand all the negativity towards the original Arlo cameras... I own Arlo, Pro, and Q (as the result of buying more cameras over time). Sure you have to buy batteries on the original Arlo but they last nearly 4 months!

Hi Deals

Simple, they claim it is a good security camera solution - when in fact it falls very short of the minimal requirements. Considering that and the premium price of their cameras and system a lot of us felt burned by Netgear. I know I did, and after 8 months replaced it with a solid IP PoE system.

Arlo / Arlo Pro - why they make poor security cameras: ( a lot of this also applies to the Ring cameras )
There are a number of reasons, which apply to many consumer wire free products.
The Arlo / Arlo Pro system fail in 2 of the 3 minimal viable product categories for security cameras, and in the 3rd one does a poor job ( ID distance very short, night image poor ).
1) Poor resolution and wide FOV make for short ID distances
2) Poor reliability, cameras will disconnect from base station, base station needs periodic reboots, cloud service auth failures
3) Lag with cloud service
4) Issues with reliability of motion detection
5) Issues to lag before recording
6) Poor night vision
7) No embedded time stamp - thus videos are poor for evidence. ( Arlo, Ring, and Nest fail here )
8) Difficult to manage multiple clips for downloading from the cloud service.
9) Lag to access live view
10) Cameras do not have local storage - thus when disconnected to the base station they are unable to record events.

Note: Arlo base station has USB ports which were intended for future options, however reportedly Netgear did not enable local attached storage until the Arlo Pro base station came out. Arlo Pro 2 improves on the Arlo / Arlo Pro with 1080p resolution, which helps. However the system still suffers from numerous faults similar to it's prior versions, and only when the cameras are wired do you see significant functional improvements. At which point you may want to just install a PoE system.

From: John Moriarty commenting on the wirecutter article which claimed the Arlo system was a good option:
"Installed the Arlo Pro over the weekend off the back of this reivew, and am sending it back tomorrow. Really disappointed. Main gripes:.."

Arlo Pro are better than Arlo Pro 2 cameras!

The night vision is bad on the Arlo Pro 2.
I just returned arlo 2 cameras. Their zones algorithm us crap. The software has major bugs. For example the camera will trigger and show recording 2 hrs. Going through the movie it will be just 1 frame repeated for 2 hrs. Also while on bateries the camera cannot be used with advanced capabilities. I belive that Arlo is filling their servers on purpose with fake long clips to force the buyers to upgrade to paid plan. Don't buy into their ecosystem, it's software is half - baked

What did you end up buying that you felt was a superior product? I prefer the idea of PoE vs batteries.
