Wait what.. is that a cable hanging?

This can't be called "Security" Camera. Cables of security camera shouldn't be exposed like that.

Indeed!!

Just discount the power cord and you're good to ransack.

LOL - well have to plan your power cabling route better than the picture.

If an intruder can cut the power cable without being seen they could also disable it in other ways (block, damage) regardless of the physical power line. The power cable is not an issue if the camera(s) is positioned well.

This is pretty much the same setup as the nest branded outdoor cameras. The couple I have are mounted at a height that would make it difficult for anyone to mess with the cable. I did however run the cable through stucco directly behind the mount so there really is only an inch or ao of cable that is visible. If someone did take the time to climb a ladder and mess with the camera ill get a notification and have plenty of time to meet them with a shotgun or other firearm of choice.

Routing the power cable indeed is a critical to a solid setup.

The design challenge:
  • To get a chance of a good facial ID image you need to mount the cameras 8 feet or lower, otherwise you get a lot of baseball caps and hood shots.
  • Keep cables hard to reach for intruders to cut.

I would recommend considering using surface mounted conduit and a junction box to run the wires.

In the end when I was designing my setup I realized that the work to route wifi cameras with wired power was about the same as wiring up IP PoE camera, I decided to go with IP PoE cameras.

This is a good deal. I bought for 90 bucks last time and price matched to another website that popped on google shopping.. total price was 67 dollars.
also if you need a longer power cord, I was able to use this to power the camera..
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=5432
it is available in white, to match the yi's power cord.

Hi Kyle,

When I see IP PoE and other deals I think are interesting I post it to the end of the thread here:

There's a nice one right now going on, so look for it - 6x 4K camera + NVR kit from Costco.

Point laser at it. Will kill the sensor?
