I spent a month there last January -- Its relatively safe. You just need to be aware of your surrounding and use common sense. Cape Town is an amazing city (minus the water crisis). Also May/June is start of winter in that hemisphere.

I went in 2015. Been to 50+ countries and it was by far my favorite. Loved it so much I went back last year. I doubt I'll go more than two years without taking another trip there. Didn't feel unsafe at all. Do you feel unsafe when you visit New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, etc? You might exercise due caution as you would anywhere..... But I felt no less safe in South Africa than I do here at home in the US.
