Speakers for TV

448 235 February 14, 2018 at 12:23 PM
My TV's speakers aren't great so I used an old set of computer stereo speaker with a subwoofer. The speakers are some junk Dell ones that came with a desktop from the early years in 2000. The 3.5mm cable to these speakers has a bad connection in the wire so I want to get a new set of speakers+subwoofer.
Amazon has a few but they are all low watt RMS rated at 10W, 15W, and 18W. There are some that claim 200W and 250W but they are likely fake power ratings.
Never bought speakers before, so I really don't know what to look at. Maybe I don't even need a subwoofer? I just need a decent set of speakers that don't sound horrible.
I would like to spend under $50 for a set of AC powered stereo speakers with a subwoofer. Prime shipping if possible so I can easily return them if there is a problem.

Can anyone help me find a decent set of speakers like this for my TV?

You are not going to get much on that budget. There are 2 ways of doing TV speakers for decent sound. One is with a standard receiver and 5.1 speaker setup and the other is with a sound bar. A low cost sound bar is probably more to your needs and budget. See:

Agree with this person. IMO, you should create an alert for "soundbar" to try for a better deal than just Amazon or Walmart. Good luck!

Thank you, I never really considered a sound bar. They are usually expensive compared to computer speakers+subwoofer which are about $35.

Why do you recommend a sound bar over computer speakers+subwoofer?

Sound bars seem to be $90-$200, more than I paid for this TV(1080p Roku), but are they really going to provide anything more than a set of cheap computer speakers with subwoofer? Aside from wifi, Bluetooth, SD card slot, ethernet, remote control, voice control, CD rom drive, laser light shows, some foreign lady's voice that you can't understand, etc.

This is Amazon's choice for speakers with subwoofer for $35. 4 stars with 10,000 reviews.

You get what you pay for. If you think you are going to get decent sound out of cheap $35 dollar, 30 watt speakers go for it. Frankly, they will be no better than the garbage on your TV in most cases save for maybe the cheap sub woofer. Good computer speakers cost $200+. Speaker\audio systems can run the gambit from a few hundred to many 1000s and come in a full range of sizes as well. If $35 speakers did the job just as well, then the others would not exist.

That said, if you have an inexpensive TV and setup, then I would just live with the sound from the TV.

One thing you can do is buy one in your budget from Walmart and return in a week or two if you don't like it.
