Zebra V-301 steel fountain pen with bonus black ink cartridge - $1.83 at Amazon via add-on. They usually run around $4.

This pen is not going to win any awards, but it's not a bad way to test the water if you're curious about fountain pens.

I own a crazy number of fountain pens.

Fountain pens are great because they are refillable and are designed to be used without applying pressure like you have to with a ballpoint. Take your best rollerball or gel pen experience. It's better than that. There are also insane amounts of ink that offer fraud protection, sheening, and other special properties.

This is one bad pen. A good deal would be some of the Jinhao and Wing Sung pens on eBay for between about 69 cents and five bucks. They write lights out.

As to autograph pens, you want a stub nib for that, not flex. As to gold, most gold nibs aren't flexible. A Vanishing Point nib certainly isn't. There are steel flex nibs. It's difficult to get true flex unless you buy a vintage pen. To further drive home the point about steel, there are insanely flexible dip pen nibs in steel. It's all about use and metallurgy.

Again, my experience with this Zebra is that it is bad and will give fountain pens a bad name undeservedly.

I like zebra pens, but this fountain pen is the worst. It's scratchy as heck.

By the manufacturer response to one question, there are two batches: one is scratchy as hell and the other was updated. They say you should be able to contact them and they'll send a replacement, supposedly way I see it. I wouldn't discount it entirely, but I also am not the type to risk time like this.

Most fountain pens under $100 have steel nibs. This one is probably especially bad

I hate to break this to you but this is not a great autograph pen. This has a steel nib and won't get you much line variation. If you wanted a good autograph pen, you want something with gold.

For example, the Pilot Vanishing Point 18K. It's retractable like a ball point pen but it's really a fountain pen with a high quality 18k nib. It's also refillable.

How can an item that only has 2.8 stars (out of 5) Amazon rating from almost 300 reviews make the front page??? Postings like this make me question the validity of Slickdeals Frown
