I think other than the Honda and Yamaha they're all the same. I bought a bunch of generics to send to Puerto Rico last year and reports were they all worked well. At this price, I got one for my house just in case. This is a great deal.

I do wonder how long I can keep it in the box before using it. Should I run it once I get it, or can it stay boxed indefinitely?

I have a 6500 Generac that was in the box for 12 years. I took it out and ran it this past year for Irma. It ran fine once I disconnected the oil pressure sensor. It kept stopping because it thought the oil pressure was low; but I knew it was full of oil; so I disconnected the pressure sensor and ordered a new one. One of my relatives needed it for several weeks; but we got lucky.

I plan to do an initial burn in then drain it and let it sit. I may start it once a year but other than that just sit. I'm no pro. There are some other threads on SD I found about this unit with good info.

Seals and moving parts dry out and crack if not used...I would take it out and exercise it regularly, other wise you could be out of luck when you need it. Run it a few times a year, change the oil regularly and it should run for years

Two of these in parallel will work very well in an emergency for the average house. DON"T plug it into your house electrical though, unless you have a certified electrician install a switch box!!!!!!
