Just bought two from this guy. One didn't boot, other is physically damaged. I should just mark return and repurchase.

Bought two used from this seller last time it was at this price. One looked like new, the other had a horizontal scratch across the front. Both booted just fine after being reset with the reset button on the back. Both flashed to AiMesh AC68U firmware with only a couple hiccups. The first one wouldn't boot into recovery mode without an immediately prior NVRAM reset. Also had loads of issues loading the Mini-CFE page in Chrome, switched to Edge and it came right up.

Same issues with the two that I received. Both of mine had a horizontal scratch. One looked like it was pried open and had broken tabs so it wouldn't fully stay closed. Successfully updated firmware and CFE on one of them to run AiMesh; have yet to try it on the other one. I messaged the seller and he/she responded back saying they would send two replacements but I haven't received anything thus far.

I messaged Feb. 14 and yep, I used 1.0.2.0 US AiMesh. Didn't change the steps; just had some difficulty with getting the router to go into recovery mode. I ended up searching the comments on the baytechpro page for various users' tips on how to get into recovery. Tried several, and I think the one that worked for me involved holding down the WPS button along with reset and another one. Also to open the 192.168.1.129 address in an incognito window (rather than normal window) and continue to refresh for the mini CFE page to pop up.

1) I used this guide to flash the AC1900 to AC68U so that AiMesh can be setup.

http://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/

2) I just updated a day before yesterday using the above guide. I haven't done any of this stuff in a few years so had to struggle but was able to read up a lot and finally figured out a few things on my own. If you follow the above guided steps AiMesh WILL NOT WORK unless you use a CFE file that has AiMesh support.

3) So on step 15 instead of
Upload original_cfe.bin to https://cfeditor.pipeline.sh/ > Select 1.0.2.0 US as Source

Use:
Upload original_cfe.bin to https://cfeditor.pipeline.sh/ > Select 1.0.2.0 US AiMesh as Source (option 3)

4) I flashed the AC1900 to AC68U and then had to read a lot to understand the CFE part as I kept pulling out my hair to get AiMesh to work as its supposed to work out of the box but my 2 routers would not see each other no matter what. I used another users CFE file to do the steps and that worked but updating the above steps would have netted the same result.

5) I had to turn off the "Airtime Fairness" as wifi kept dropping on the Mesh Node (second router) .
6) Under Roaming assistant I had to adjust the dbs accordingly 2.4=-70; 5=-90

Ask me any other questions from the guide and I can try to help.

Really appreciate this Shahhere! I also had some drop outs with the mesh node so I'll definitely try to turn off "Airtime Fairness." Also I'll try the Roaming assistant adjustment you mentioned.

I also noticed a weird issue where the 2.4Ghz network would randomly slow to a crawl; I'd have to restart the node and/or main router for it to revert back to normal speeds, but then after a few hours of usage it'd slow again. This only happened with the node on/AiMesh setup. Before when I just used my one AC1900 this didn't happen (or when I turn off the node). This also isn't a problem for the 5Ghz network...just the 2.4. If you have any thoughts or possible solutions I'm all ears! Thanks and repped Smilie

The Airtime fairness feature is set to off in Merlin from default and this turned off made the biggest improvements for my case. My house is 3200 squrefeet and the main is at one end of the house with the office and connectivity setup so the node i put on the other end and so the db adjustments helped.

I am not getting automatic slowness so not sure what will help there but I'll ping you if i come upon something.

The whole Aimesh is not 100% solid but the latest firmware update patched a lot of issues and made it much closer to 100% than before iterations.

Thanks for the reply! It's been about 2 days since I've tested things with the Airtime fairness feature off and it looks like I haven't encountered the slowness (thus far). Hoping that fixed things. Good point about it being off on Merlin - before I set up AiMesh I was solely on Merlin and encountered no issues, so it's even more probable it's because Airtime fairness is on by default with Asus's official firmware. As for my place I'm about half the square footage and I have the routers only two rooms away so do you think I should just keep the dbs at default levels? Thanks.

Yes, keep the default and only adjust if needed. Dropping the dbs means there's more disturbance/ noise.
