Seagate's reputation for making unreliable drives is because it purchased Maxtor in the mid-2000's, and Maxtor made unreliable drives. They also released a drive in 2013 that had a super high failure rate (4 TB drive with 30%+ failures I think???). On the whole, Seagate's reliability is similar to WD and HGST, and they're one of the biggest HDD vendors for that reason.

I could throw out personal anecdotes about Seagate but they don't prove anything. The best thing is to look at empirical data from Backblaze or any other sources.

So their reputation for making unreliable drives only comes from them making unreliable drives, so therefore their drives are reliable? ....uh, huh?
