i would go used. Lots of people unloading good quality stuff. Search for the keyword/technology that you like for bindings/boot lacing systems. Board is probably the last thing i would worry about. boots and bindings are more important.

as you progress more and try different boards, you will learn more about your style, likes, dislikes about boarding, snow type, feel etc.

Since you are in norcal, craigslist is probably best.

Is there any particular brands that have more credibility and some to avoid that you recommend?

any of the big brands are safe.

I hate to say go w burton because everyone has it, but they make some good stuff. and lots of ppl own their gear. There are plenty of smaller niche brands which make cool looking stuff, but sellers usually demand higher prices. Go with some basic burton gear (boots/bindings) as the market it typically filled with burton.

As far as the actual board, get whatever looks good. Like i said earlier. You will refine your preferences as you ride more.
