Is this much of an upgrade over the Archer C7?

The firmware for TP-Link has horrible update schedules, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole unless you specifically plan on running DD-WRT on this.

Dd-wrt hasn't been updated since 2006. In addition don't think this router supports flashing custom software

I have a v1 C9 from 3 years ago. Has been solid and get great reception. The last firmware was from 2/12/18 which addresses the KRACK vulnerability. Also have a Linksys acs 1900 wrt running lede which is quite horrible esp on the 2.4ghz band in comparison. Fwiw.

I love my C7 way better than I liked this one when I had it...Wish there were some better management features though...

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "hasn't been updated since 2006" for dd-wrt? I see new software version updates from them like once a week on their forums. Maybe you're just looking at their super old outdated website (not the forums)?

I've had three of these routers so far for myself family and friends. They are rock solid and reliable! I've never had a problem getting dc'd or loosing wireless connectivity gaming. The wireless reception is okay. I'd highly recommend these, all the linksys routers I've bought have been triple the price and over triple worst than these archer c9s. Just make sure amazon ships you a new box, I've received "New" packages that were obviously open and they had problems.
