the i5 8th generation, 15Z975-A.AAS5U1 TOUCHSCREEN is $999 with 8gb and 256gb ssd. Comes with 1 slot ram open, so upgrade cost +$300 but now with better cpu. Depending on preference +comfort of do-it-yourself. Cost even lower if you have office supply rewards to burn.

i5-8250 has better benchmark.

faster 8th generation cpu 4 core 8 threads but in 2017 casing & design, ie: webcam at bottom, smaller battery. However, cheaper than 2018 models.

what is the pro & con between Costco's i5 vs i7 version? Is paying $300 more worth it for someone looking for a long term laptop? TIA

I'm wondering if the SSD is ultimately upgradeable as well. I know they didn't upgrade the battery in this one but....I'd really like to know if the price is worth it compared to the all new upgraded LG with 8GB and 256SSD.

8th gen i5 beats 7th gen i7? I would have never knew that.

Green Key - I hope you can see this. Will I ever be able to upgrade SSD or battery in the future on this one? Is it worth the 999 price and Costco warranty or should I just wait for the upgraded 2018 one and hope Costco carries it?

A lot depends on what you want to do with your laptop. Originally, I bought costco i7 laptop, 16 gb ram and 512gb ssd. HOWEVER, I found that I only have around 325 gb SSD for user storage which is not enough for me. Thus I went with costco i5, +$265 for 1TB SSD, and +$85 8gb ram. Now it cost +$50 more, but I have 1TB of SSD which gives me room to grow for next 3-5 years and faster CPU.
I also have office supply rewards to burn: Get 1tb m.2 WD SSD from Office Depot (price match walmart), Get crucial 8gb ram ddr4 2400 from staples (price match amazon)

Costco i5 2017 models only have one slot SSD, so you'll have to clone to new SSD if you want to upgrade. It took me 1 hour to clone to new 1tb SSD (via acronis), open casing and install new SSD.

The new 2018 models are not available to costco right now, no guarantee they will carry it. New 2018 8th generation 15.6" models i5 $1250 WITHOUT touch or i7 $1450 (no tax w/beach camera or adorama on amazon) WITH touch (8gb ram, 256gb SSD, NO thunderbolt)
Personally, budget is a consideration, and I don't need the fastest speed, nor do I use laptop webcam. The 2017 battery of 8hours is sufficient for me. 2018 battery can hold upto 12 hours but I'm not willing to pay for it.

yeah, surprise me too. Apparently 8th generation is a big leap. It's now 4 core and 8 thread cpu vs the older 2 core 4 thread.

Yes, you can upgrade SSD, but you'll have to clone since there is only one slot. Battery is NOT upgradable to the bigger capacity ones. Costco does have 90 days laptop return policy, I am not sure if costco will carry 2018 models. Personally, I returned the costco 2017 i7 7th generation (due to hard disk capacity), and keep the i5 8th generation ones+upgrades. Been using it for one month now....loving it.

update: 1tb WD blue m.2 SSD is now frontpage for $230

Green key - thanks so much for replying. Totally answered my question! The link for the drive was much appreciated as well. I'd gone ahead and ordered the i5 from Costco and once I upgrade the storage and RAM I'm sure it will be fantastic for my needs. The battery isn't that big of a deal for me either.
