My son wants to play monster Hunter. He's never played one before. Which of these would be best for him (of the 3DS ones). Or is there another one that is better?

The PS4/Xbox One game Monster Hunter World is the best. Sticking with 3DS, Generations is probably the best choice.

I would get Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate based on the value alone. Generations can be found physically for about the same price. They all play about the same though.

I never played any of them until I played MH generations. I have purchased all of them now and played them. Each has their own pros and cons but I think you get the best bang for your buck with MHG. It mixes the stuff from 3 & 4 and has a pretty active online community as well. In summary, you can buy 3 & 4 for cheap or you can buy both by getting generations. But note, generations is its own game with content from 3 & 4

The newest one (Monster Hunter World) is best for a newcomer at this point. Plus it won't destroy his hands like the handheld ones do!
That's not on the list of items to buy and it is not on a Nintendo system.

They're hard games, but id just go with the cheapest one on the list, MH3. It has a single player mode where the monsters are just a bit easier. Long game too, many hours out of it.

Ah, you're right. Didn't see 3ds only as a limiter there. In that case I would say 4 Ultimate!

If I wasn't a fan of MHG, is it safe to say that I won't be a fan of any other game in the series? Was hoping it'd have a linear story mode as opposed to grinding missions at the same places.

They all play pretty much exactly the same. You either like them all or you don't.
