The first two books in the Witcher series are on sale for $3 at most ebook outlets.

The first book, The Last Wish, is actually a collection of short stories while Blood of Elves is a proper novel.

I found this reddit page when I first wanted to buy the physical books. Great guide. https://www.reddit.com/r/witcher/...oks_guide/

If memory serves, it might have been best to read Last Wish first. Not sure if it adds to Blood of the Elves per se, but it certainly adds to the Witcher characters, and introduces a few. I found many of the short stories enjoyable, but YMMV.

Does The Last Wish add on to Blood of Elves? I'm not a fan of short stories unless it adds to the actual story.

The Last Wish and the Sword of Destiny are collections of disjointed short stories. Starting with Blood of Elves the epic story of Ciri begins and you can read in order at that point.

Consider buying some of the books that released with the Witcher 3 video game, like The World of the Witcher to get acquainted with the universe.

The World of the Witcher: Video Game Compendium https://www.amazon.com/dp/1616554827/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fRUMAbD25ZTB6

To clarify- read the short stories first to learn about some of the main characters as per the previous posts advice.

FWIW,

Netflix is putting together their own series based on the books. The pilot episode script was just finished as reported on a number of media outlets.

Personally I found The Last Wish to be quite poorly written, especially compared to the rest of the books, though it does contain very useful background information such as how Geralt and Yennefer met. It's not really a collection of short stories but a bunch of disjointed chapters from a single story, some just a paragraph or two long.

For people with questions about reading order, here are some answers from goodreads. Seems like the consensus is read the short stories first, then the 5 saga novels

Very, very tempting! A couple years ago I read the fan translations because they hadn't been (officially) translated in to English, so I might pick up these to see how good the official ones are. The ones I read were fantastic.
