Advice on Wireless Router

549 58 March 5, 2018 at 03:32 AM
I have a 4,000 SF house and would like my wireless to extend 30ft or so outside the house to the pool area. Right now I have a 4 or 5 year old Asus RT-AC66R and it has been pretty good but the range to the extremities of my house is marginal. I plan to upgrade my router and think I have it narrowed down to these three options:

1) Asus AC2900 RT-AC86U (price point $180) - This one appears to get good ratings about anywhere you look. Just a very solid router. I have seen some comments that state nearly double the range and speed of the RT-AC66R, so that would be perfect if so.

2) Asus AC5300 RT-AC5300 (price point $230) - This one appears to have some mixed reviews, but is an Asus so should have good support and continued firmware updates. This one is a little more expensive, but errs on the side of making sure I have enough wireless range.

3) Google WiFi - This option is completely different being a mesh network. I see mixed reviews but mostly positive. I see many reviews that state "super simple" and "best router ever" and many people saying it was the best purchase they have made in years. Many report excellent range and speed with a very user friendly interface.

I would love to have some advice from any experts.

Thanks

Don't think people usually answers this type of questions here, but having gone to mesh from 2 asus AC AP, i would suggest google wifi or similar (velop, eero, orbi, etc)
