For years I have been hearing about how wonderful REI customer service is.

I bought a jacket yesterday for $174. Today it is on sale for $140.

On their website they have this: https://www.rei.com/help/pricing.html

So, I contacted them via live chat to try and get the difference. Nope.

If I want that price I now have to order a second one, and once I receive the first one in the mail I now have to return it for a refund.

What if something I purchased goes down in price?

For products purchased on REI.com or in REI stores, we will honor the sale price if you purchased within the last 14 days and your item is the same product number, color and size as the item on sale. If so, we will gladly refund the difference to you. This does not apply to REI Garage (formerly REI Outlet) purchases, which are not subject to price adjustments. Contact us for more information.

Nice find. I am looking for gear for my Iceland trip this summer. These boots might be perfect!

I had dividend to spend, bought a DrinkTanks 20 oz tumbler [rei.com], they are now $14.19. I had previously bought the 16 oz one and like it very much. I like that the base is very narrow and fits into infant car seat cup holder. I also like the design of the lid. I had previously purchased and returned a Hydro Flask tumbler, the lid design wasn't for me, had too much dribble down the side of the cup. I like the relative slim design vs the comparable Ozark Trail tumblers I have as well.

What was their reason for not giving you the difference? Nothing wrong with returning and buying a second either, bit of a hassle but they won't give you any trouble.

The last time I purchased from REI, they sent 13 different shipments for one order (environment killer with all the wasted packaging). When I tried to return four of the items (wrong size), they couldn't process the refund even though I am a member and had the packing slips and receipts. Took almost an hour for the manager to do the refund. Now I will only buy from REI if I know an item will fit.

The CSR said that because it was considered clearance pricing that there was nothing they could do.

So, I ended up ordering a second jacket and will return the first one when I have a chance. Still puzzled about why they would elect to create a hassle for everyone involved (not to mention additional shipping costs for them), but hey..Confused

Probably the CSR was just following protocol and script to the issue. So don't blame them and have the end result be the same.

That's actually been my experience with non-clearance stuff too. And I think there's a good reason for it:

Say they refund part of the payment to cover the difference. Great. But what happens when months down the line, said person returns the item for whatever reason--and lets say the payment source was paypal (instore, they can only give cash or GC)--the returnee would actually MAKE money off the return. I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's a pretty big one. Given how many people clearly abuse REI's lax policies (check out the poor state of returned shoes at a garage sale sometime), I've no doubt that many people would abuse such a loophole.

Are these boots any good? Can someone vouch for these? I cut meat and I'm in for a new pair of waterproof/slip-proof boots. Thanks in advance!
