Because the max at the time was 128GB.
On the journey to 256GB, they probably couldn't get consistent yields, so they settled at 200GB.
Of course, now there are 256GB cards. So what's next, 512GB, right?
However, on the journey to 512GB, they thought, well, since we were able to make a 200GB card, and as of right now, it was difficult to make a 512GB card, can we make a 400GB card?

Well... Yes We Can!! - https://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Ul...B074RNRM2B

As all ratings before, they always denoted a "minimum" of 10MB/s write. The Class 10, U1 (using UHS), and V10 are all a minimum 10MB/s write.

U3 and V30 are minimum 30MB/s write.

This card (200GB U1), although marked as U1, actually performs anywhere between 30-40MB/s write (I've seen benchmarks of peak 50MB/s write). This card will suffice for most people.

Actually, A1 refers to Android1, which is a specification for cards for use with Android phones if you choose to move Apps/App Data/App Storage to the SD card for Android phones. A1 cards have a confirmed minimum amount of required IOPS (random 4k read/write) to speed sufficient for users for use in Android phones.

A1 came about because manufacturers would only concentrate on having fast sequential writes per second, but many phones crashed/had abhorrent experience with using SD cards that had terrible/terrible random 4k write performance. I used to (and had proven) that some of the older C6 cards would outperform some C10 cards by a factor of 400x in the random 4k write performance sector!!!

Lastly, if you needed the fastest sequential write performance, you would get a V90 card (minimum guaranteed 90MB/s sequential write). However that would require a UHS-II bus (see picture for how new MicroSD cards look with all the additional pins)

This card works great in the Switch. I just picked this exact card up a few days ago for mine.

Just a note, "class 1" isn't quite correct here. There's the old "class" speed ratings, which went up to "class 10", but these days the speed is classified by the newer UHS and U ratings. Pretty much just look for the U rating number inside the big "U" cup symbol to get an idea of it's speed. U1 is fast (roughly equivalent to "class 10" I believe), U3 is much faster.

Wondering the same thing. There's a Samsung U3 128 gb for $40 right now. Not sure if U3 even matters for use with the Switch. If it doesn't, this seems like it'd be the better option. Thoughts, anyone?

256GB wouldn't fit in this form factor when the 200GB size first came out.

I think the read speed tends to be the same, but the write speed is significantly better in a U3, right?

That's why I'm questioning, if only being used for the Nintendo Switch, if there would be any noticeable difference (making this the better deal costwise, compared to U3s)

It should be perfectly fine for Switch. Last I recall, it was unknown whether the Switch can transfer at U3 speeds, so waiting for a high capacity U3 might be pointless.

I choise samsung 128GB u3 with 4k for 40usd
1.5 times more for 1.5 times as much space? Sounds like a good deal to me. I'd much rather have a larger card down the road than a smaller one. What makes this deal luke warm isn't that you can but a smaller card for less, but that this card has sold for $50 before.
