This isn't a smart tv though so what software would you need updating?
I agree it sounds a little silly to expect meaningful software updates on a TV like this, except maybe major faults and only by a manufacturer/technician, but just because this TV isn't a 'smart TV' doesn't mean it doesn't run software in the form of firmware, updatable via a USB port (usually only by a technician). Hell, just the fact that it has USB ports means it can run something.

My 50" Panasonic Viera 2008 model bit the dust. The motherboard popped. Anyhow, jumped on this from previous post @ $499. Picture looks fine, not breathtaking, but it is fine. My only gripe is that the sound is weird, kind of tinny like when you hear recording of audio. I tried it with surround mode, changed sound mode, and EQ, but it still sounds strange. Dont get me wrong the speaker volume is fine, and it does sound better at louder volumes, but at lower volumes it has that strange bass or echo that makes it kind of sound far away or like your in a barrel.

Septre is not well known in the TV brand, but they have been making excellent PC monitors for at least a decade. I've bought 5 of their 55" 4K models and haven't had any issues so far 6+ months later. My only complaint is you get what you pay for here, no frills TV, kind of thick and average build quality. But can't beat the price, and I've definitely seen worse quality, just don't expect Samsung or LG looks for this price.
Actually, closer to 25 years - I used to work for a reseller that carried Sceptre back in the mid-90s. Sceptre is one of those brands, along with Viewsonic, AOC, and a number of others that were leaders in the market or known for making high-end product in their time. As with many brands, they fell out of favor or lost marketing recognition. Or, sometimes manufacturers like this just leave the US market.

All they have to do to solve that is Roku, or some other plug in

what are you talking about. Homeless shelters don't need a TV. They need housing for the homeless and food for the homeless. While I'm sure the shelters wouldn't mind taking the TV, it's not quite on the top of their list of needs.
Don't listen to homeless people on slickdeals! They are tricking you!

I would be all over this if I didn't buy the 65" 4K HDR set from Microcenter on an open box special at $529 for my bedroom.

This is a really good price.

Vizio is a better brand, and only sells for $140 more for an upgrade to 120Hz, smart capabilities and LED backlighting at Walmart as well. How is this FP and not that one??
