How can somebody select spam/self promotion as a reason to thumb down when it's an IN STORE ONLY deal?

Posted THIS thread:

As usual with the YMMV/in store only deals it's getting thumbed down to hell and back with 25% of the votes being for 'spam/self promotion'. How can it be getting TD if the links in the thread are just for reference(as stated in thread)?

I really wish SD would do away with the TU/TD mechanic since it gets heavily abused. I've even seen people on other forums(i.e. CAG) mention going on here to TD X or Y thread to 'hide' it before.

this post is exactly what I was looking for Smilie I have exactly the same problem! I posted 2 deals with codes that were code in the main page of the stores (and 2 different and completely not connected store, not third party seller and actually famous brands, their own store) and i got TD for self promotion! Isn't there a way for SD to check the posts in which the thumb down are added to see if they are real? Because I mean it doesn't make seriously any kind of sense I'm not even sure why people do this

People are allowed to vote how they wish as long as they aren't abusing it by targeting someone or being paid to vote etc.

My guess would be that if they see an OP posting the same site or item/manufacturer over and over they may think the OP works for the company.
That is just a guess though and they may have other reasons.
There isn't a way for us to check every deal with a TD at this time but if you suspect incorrect voting you can mod alert the thread.

If it is a good deal the TUs should outweigh the TDs pretty quickly.

Still seems like a system that can be and/or is abused at times. I've even seen comments on other forums(i.e. Reddit, CAG, etc) where people try to rally other users to go and 'bury' threads on other deal forums like this one by spamming the TD's. I haven't seen it often, but I have seen it mentioned before on other deal forums. Of course by the time one would try and prove the illicit TD's and thread crapping said deal would probably be off the first page on it's own anyway.

Those would be good candidate threads to mod alert to have the voting looked into.

Hello Schooby, if you check my feed you'll see I post everything i find online that can be good there is nowhere the same store, including the latest deal i post that it got eliminated probably because 5 people click on TD as spam, the deal it was on the home page of this store, I just found it online when i was looking at facebook and it shows up as sponsored store in my feed i open it and in the mainpage of the store (not amazon, american website, famous brand in europe) there was the discount that whoever open the website can see, so I would like to understand exactly in which way it is then checked if what is TD is real or not, because I can understand that people TD and put a valid reason but putting TD for promotional in something i found online in a mainpage of a well known store and for all the store it seems a free attack with no specific reason, so I'm trying to understand if later SD check the TD and the reasons for it, at least i get a better idea on how it works, i'm sorry I'm new here, I'm trying to give my contribute on everything i find that seems interesting but this is incredibly weird

ok so now I understand reading what you just wrote that there are really people doing this, but I still don't understand, why? what is the point? if this website is to post deal that everyone can access why someone want to bury other's deal? what is the purpose? sorry I may too naive but I'm quite difficult to understand this

Some resell retail clearance on Amazon and eBay (I used to) and may be stalking those prices hoping they stay hush hush till they reach a price point where they're comfortable with the profit margin they'll have reselling them.

Some people may also be accustomed to point, click and shipping everything to their doorstep from Amazon or whatever other online stores, so going in store to get a clearance deal and having to lug it home for themselves may be a foreign concept to them.

Some others may also view the deal(s) I've posted as belonging to whatever forum they frequent more and that I 'stole' said deal from that forum. These are the ones that I mentioned people on other forums trying to get users from there to come here and 'bury'.

Still more folks may just dislike the person who posted the deal and be vindictive enough to TD and thread crap on anything they post.

That's four of the more likely reasons stuff gets TD and buried on here and other forums.

thanks for the clarification, so i suppose if those are the reason there is nothing in particular that can be done to avoid this problem right?

I doubt it. Unless SD required everybody thumbing down a thread to give a dissertation length reason as to why they're thumbing it down in the first place to dissuade people from doing it for the reasons I mentioned above I don't see this sort of practice stopping anytime soon.
