FYI - important posts to note ( thanks efirestone, GBotDO )

After reading reviews I ordered one. From what I can tell here are some of the important points to consider:
- Camera image quality is high, but 3MP. Just the price of the cameras is going to justify the cost, plus you get a 3TB HDD and a POE switch (built into the NVR) along with it.
- Be sure you're happy with 3MP. The NVR looks to max out at recording 3MP, so even if you bought a 4MP later you won't be able to realize the quality with this NVR.
- There doesn't appear to be audio from the cameras (not a huge surprise)
- The software for these isn't great, including the mobile apps
- You may need to firmware upgrade (via USB) the cameras to get them to work with the mobile apps
- The cams, being Hikvision rebrands, appear to have good compatibility with Blue Iris, including some extended features (not sure which though) so that might fix the mobile app problem if you're running BI
- The cameras support VBR which I greatly prefer for network bandwidth and storage reasons.

Open Questions
- I think only 8 of the 16 ports on the NVR are POE. The other 8 may require otherwise-powered cameras (which could be an add-on POE switch). I saw this mentioned, but it's not clear it was definitely this unit.
- The cameras are often mentioned as only 1080p, which would be 2MP and not 3MP. Or that they can be viewed live at 2MP but recorded at 3MP. I'm pretty sure this is just marketing because people know that 1080p is good, but no one knows what 1536p is.

This is the system I have. 3MP cameras, only 8 of the 16 ports have POE.

If you want to switch to Hikvision firmware, check this out (I haven't done it yet but keep meaning to).

Edit; FWIW I think these are from Hikvision's 76xx model of NVR, which support up to 6MP cameras. So maybe upgrading later (including adding another HDD since it has 2 SATA slots) is still an option.

Edit 2; consider using better Ethernet cable than what's included if you have any really long runs, and generally be careful when installing this cable. I have one really long run and I'm guessing I pulled/stretched the cable too far. It worked for a while then started dropping the connection more and more until it didn't connect and I had to replace it. The other 7 cables have been fine so far, knock on wood.

Anyone have any input on the quality of this set? Or how it compares to that LaView set that was sale last week for $380?

The quality should be the same as the LAVIEW kit as both kits are made by Hikvision.
The Swann NVR has 16 channels and 3TB HDD preinstalled with higher total incoming/outgoing bandwidth. It's truly plug and play. The Swann cameras are older models with metal casing vs plastic on the newer Laview cameras.
BTW, you may apply the15% off coupon PREPSPRING from 1PM until 8PM PST today. It's the last chance to get it at such a low price because it looks like Swann is clearing out this older model.

Their compatibility page linked from the eBay description doesn't work

Anyone have the camera model for this? I don't really understand the specs, and wish they'd provide how it looks

Any reviews on this kit? Need to know if the stream is encrypted so won't be hacked.

Is this h.264 or h.265?

Thanks so much

H. 264 only. The stream is probably not encrypted. If you are concerned use VPN for remote viewing and disable the Internet access to the NVR in the firewall.

You can go to Swann's webpage [swann.com] for more information and reviews. The cameras look like the Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I.

Note: A Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I goes for about $70 from Chinese vendors. so 8x 70 = $560.

I think you could always just not give it internet access, and only view it locally when you need to...

Hi rainman01,

Encrypting the stream does not stop the cameras / NVR from getting hacked.

You want to turn of UPnP, setup VPN, do not port forward, .. and as Klepto points out.. even isolate it from the internet. ( that's my preferred option )
