Free Apple iPad 9.7-inch (5th Gen) - HIGHLY YMMV - AT&T Loyalty Program no committment

Please read this entire post. This is highly YMMV, so don't hate if you can't get one. You will need to deal with AT&T customer loyalty department (retention)(might also work at other cell providers). If you have ever worked with customer retention you will know that you can't simply ask for a free iPad (maybe you can) but it did take me about 20 minutes of back and forth before the offer was made. I have been an AT&T customer for about 12 years and the representative mentioned she only offered me this deal since I was a long time customer.

A few days ago I received a mailer for a good cell phone deal with a competitor. I decided it was time to call AT&T customer retention. At the end of the call the representative offered me a free 2017 32GB 9.7" Apply iPad with no commitment (technically cost me $10.60, explained below). She mentioned a current promotion they were having with their DirecTv Now service. The specific deal she mentioned was a 3 month DirecTv Now plan at $10 a month (normally $35). She said that I could cancel my subscription after 1 month and keep the iPad with no commitment or cost (other than the 1 month DirecTv Now cost of $10.60). I still really don't know exactly which iPad it is (I think it might be the cellular one).

Oh, and the whole reason I called was to get my bill lowered, so she also upgraded my 20GB data plan to their unlimited choice plan and applied some promo codes so my bill was $15 lower a month (pretty slick by itself).

I have no idea if others will be able to replicate this offer. I also have a strong feeling that other providers (Verizon, etc.) might also offer this free iPad since it is the older version and the new 6th gen iPad just came out and they are probably trying to clear shelf. Good luck SlickDealers. Hopefully a few of you are able to snag a free iPad. She also made me a pretty sweet offer on new iPhone 8 at ($249.00 with no commitment).

So you called to cancel, and to get you to stay, they gave you an iPad? Or is it specifically if you signed up for DirecTV Now?

I'm on a prepaid plan saving gobbs of money each month, so this isn't for me, but I'm trying to get more details from you so others can know what to do and benefit from it.

I should also mention that I made the call last Friday. Things may have changed on what they can offer but I wanted to make sure my iPad shipped before I unleashed all the slick sharks. Lol

I think you would have to let go the personal hotspot feature by upgrading to unlimited....personal preference I guess. But good deal, might call to see if I can get an offer without changing my plan.

I did mention that i got a letter on a competitor offer and was thinking about switching and wanted to give them a shot at keeping my business. She thanked me about 100 times for giving them a chance and ultimately gave me the iPad. I have no idea if this was a real promo or not but its what she offered me. Others might get something different.

I think the unlimited plan includes personal hotspot. But the choice plan has 3 mbs download limited so no streaming hd on netflix all day long

I think the key to this is that OP has been a customer of AT&T for 12 years

They made so much more with you being loyal for 12 years than they lost with a free iPad. Meh not so slick with AT&T charging so much for plans

Is this free with monthly bill credits or just free?

So, I think I was able to replicate OP's deal.

I called AT&T and talked to retention department. They told me the following:

This 2017 iPad 32gb deal is offered to customer who have been with them for at least 10 Years (I qualify...not to sure if that is a good thing or not)

The iPad itself is free. No bill credit, no tax, no activation fee. But, you do have to pay $10.00 for 24 months for their 1 GB per month data plan. I explicitly confirmed this with them. (I guess I will believe it when I see the bill).

I also was able to talk them into giving me a $50.00 bill credit on top of the iPad deal, but I think I just got lucky as far as that.

Overall not a bad deal considering the best deal you can get on non cellular version is $250.00 plus tax right now. I look at it as I am paying $190 over two years.

Hope this helps!

Interesting. Thanks for the followup. I was told I would only have to pay a one time fee of $10 for directv now and then cancel it. I already have the unlimited data plan. Part of me thinks this may be the cellular ipad since you needed a data plan.
