I read it when it first came out, and I couldn't remember how long ago it was. I checked the Amazon page, and the first review reminded me, as my teen daughter loves to state when anything pre-1980 comes up, "Dad, you're really old." Blush

Seriously, though, while it may not be a "classic" like LOTR, The Once and Future King, or The Worm Ourborus it's still a solid read. You might call it from the first wave of post-Dungeons & Dragons fantasy. Except for length you could consider it perfect for the advanced YA crowd, from before that term when fantasy was either for adults or grade-middle school readers. I hadn't thought about the series for a while, but I clearly remember how it was a little less pastiche then the early Dragonlance stories, yet was faster paced the LOTR. The amount of variety in the Fantasy genre has increased exponentially, but at least the original four books won't disappoint.

BTW one reason the first book holds up as well as it does is because it was not really intended as the "start" of a series, but is a self-contained story. That removes the irritation of being left in mid-story and results in a better narrative IMHO.

Great book. Read it AGES ago lol. Also when reading the magician series, don't forget to read the empire series too. Same war, from the other side. Excellent combination.

I absolutely love this book, some would say, its even my favorite book. I was maybe 8 or 9 when I read it, and I actually played the PC game Betrayal at Krondor before I ever read it. It was such a fun unique game. The entire series gets a little bit odd near the end, but somehow every book is a fun read. If you like this book I would recommend at least reading the rest of the RIftwar Saga.

My very first trip into fantasy when I was 13. Fell in love right then. Excellent series. Some sub series books are better than others but I've read everything midkemia and will always hold out hope for a series on hbo about it. If you like retro games they have pc games based on it too that are hard as hell but fun
