these zip up, they dont latch

When I worked at the airport, the hard Shell bags would pop open frequently when they get stacked in the belly of the aircraft - your bag may wind up with 6 or more bags on top of it. Often the extra weight would flatten the luggage a little bit and the hard shells latch would release. Then when it gets unstacked, there is an opportunity for your belongings to fall out. This was maybe 20 years ago, and the latches could be improved, but I feel better with soft side luggage with a zipper enclosure that goes all the way around.

Keep in mind that hard-shell suitcases can be made from different types of materials, which will affect the quality and longevity. Here's a little info from my research, in order of lowest to highest quality:

PVC - light and flexible, but has the least impact resistance; low price range; sometimes combined with stronger materials

ABS - low price range because it has a low-level strength; sometimes combined with stronger materials

Polypropylene - lightest of all materials; flexible, but not as flexible as polycarbonate; best if weight is an issue

Polycarbonate - highest level of strength; lightweight; will flex upon pressure from other suitcases and will not break; usually higher priced; best if durability is an issue

ETA: Per the Samsonite web site, this is 100% polycarbonate.

Couple questions...
Are hard-shell cases better? Why? (besides that they look way cooler).
I have only used soft suitcases and I need to replace them as they are falling apart, hey were also Samsonite, they held out well for the past 4 or 5 years. I would say we used them 2 or 3 times a year on average.

Can I expect to get the same use out of these hard-shells?

Hard cases are not just cooler looking, they are much lighter which will allow you to carry more however they do have their disadvantages where you do not get any pockets inside or out which makes organization a challenge.

Yes.

"Expandable - Fabric folded within a zipper compartment opens with a zip to add 2" or more carrying space to the interior of your suitcase. Because you never know when you might need more room."

More details on the manufacturer's website.

Given the note about hold stacking earlier, it's not difficult to imagine the locks popping open and being damaged though.

Like the previous post said, they zip and don't latch. The lock involves having the zippers pop into 2 locking mechanisms but have a good amount of give to them, so I don't foresee them breaking easily. Look at the pics from Amazon for a close-up. I have a set of American Tourister that lock similarly to these.
