Any "pro" or average homeowner shouldn't have any problems mixing Bondo. In addition, it sets up in 15 minutes, rather than overnight, and is significantly more water tolerant. They even suggest it for outdoor use such as driveway repairs, a place where your Rock Hard solution would fail miserably.

per Bondo's mixing instructions which I've memorized from working in a auto body shop , restoring a few cars , painting and carpentry professionally for many years.......
mix golf ball size product and cross of hardener and mix = an inconsistent mess....ask any pro who uses , if they tell the truth they will say you have to learn how to mix.
have put Durhams on many exteriors , never any problems.
i personally prefer replacing wood with wood , metal with metal , etc , but some customers insist on just a patch
am i the only one with a partial can of bondo left but no hardener left ??? i bet any amount that i am not
$1.96 at home depot , read their reviews if you don't believe me

Mixing Bondo isn't rocket surgery and if the "pros" you know have problems than I highly question their qualifications for being called "pros". Tubes of hardener are available for a couple bucks if you need some for some reason.

If you do use your Rock Hard Putty outside, it has to be sealed with some other product to protect it from moisture. Not so with the Bondo putty. http://www.waterputty.com/faq.html

bondo is awesome stuff but don't think you can skim it on like spackle and just rinse it off your knife.

it is very thick and sticky.

use gloves and disposable plastic tools. only mix what you can apply in about 4 minutes.

How long would this last after opening, i.e. if I get the gallon from HD but only use a quart or so of it?

I opened a can, used half, then used the other half a couple months later with out any issues.

The stuff is awesome..never used it previously and I was impressed..I bought two more cans for future projects.

The only thing ...it stinks of fumes while drying big time... I used it in the house

$13.94 for a gallon at Walmart is the cheapest I've ever seen it. Lowes and Home Depot should match that price if you ask. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bondo-...n/17056864

If it's like regular Bondo, I'd say years with a couple of considerations. First, it might start to separate, so stirring it up every few months could help prevent that. Second, the hardener can dry up in the tube, so store it tightly wrapped and/or plan on buying more next year.
