HiFiMan HE-560 [adorama.com]

$319 + free shipping

This is custom edition, which IMO is much nicer. I checked pics and here are the differences that I can see
  • + 2nd cable, balanced, 4-pin xlr, which is a way to go IMO. double the power and cleaner signal due to dedicated ground pin.
  • - leatherette box
  • + decent hard case with nice padding for headphones
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

balanced cable is a deal breaker Wink !
It comes with both balanced and unbalanced.

The webpage replies make it seem like it might not have the fancy box, though.

Good way to get into planar magnetic headphones. You do need a good amp to get the most out of them. FYI.

Friend of mine has this exact pair in mint condition, he will sell it to me for $300, this will be my first high-end cans. What sort of amp should I be looking out for, cant really afford it, so it has to be a good price as well.

How do these compare to the Monoprice Monolith 1060? Been wanting a set of planar headphones and was considering the monoliths. Thanks for any insight

I don't have these but I do own the M1060. The M1060 is a nice headphone but I think these HE 560s will be much better tuned. The only thing the M1060 have over these is a 5 year warranty. The M1060's real draw is it's planar sub bass extension which is very impressive. However I think M1060's overall signature is too dry and veiled compared to other headphones in it's class. These HE560s have the same planar bass and draw comparisons to ~$1k headphones.
