These deals are dangerous. I ended up buying the entire 5e catalog.

If you're only going to play as a character, then you only need this Player's Handbook. If you plan to run a game as the dungeon master, then you'd want to add the Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide to your collection.

All that aside, if you aren't sure about D&D, just pick up the Starter Set and forget the books. Get the 5th Edition Basic Rules from Wizards of the Coast. The set comes with premade characters, dice, and an adventure to play that's very good and is plenty long. And the free basic rules are all you need to play the adventure.

I found all my collection that was put away in the attic when I recently moved. Tons of manuals, starter kits, etc. Nice to see this is still going strong. I may have to look up some of the values of these from the early to mid 80s

I want to get into D&D, have not played it before.

Would this be recommended to start to play?

I have looked up, where I learned you need the 5th edition rules, but then also hear of the monster guide and what not, so I get confused on what actually needed for a beginner

This is the one you want to have as it is the essential one to start with.

The rules are for the Dungeon Master to sort out really. You need the Player's Hand Book to for your character and spells.

Player's handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide are the books you'll need to start. Also, dice. There is also apparently a starter kit with Character Sheets and some other odds n ends as well.

What about the monster Book?
Seems like both GM and monster Book are on sale on Amazon. Though, considering amazon often gives differ original price, are those 2 also on sale or no?

The DM guide contains some monsters as is. The Monster book is great reading, though, and gives you much more variety

Thanks everyone.

Question: How often are these on sale and what their average price?
Quick search on SD shows these books go on sale every 2 weeks for the past 2 months? Don't see anything before

At a local store, they'll retail for MSRP at $50.

On amazon, standard price is $30.

Sale price online is usually $20-25, give or take.

They've been on sale fairly frequently as of late, but it's the first that I've really seen them hit the front page, and I've been a slick dealer for a couple years at least now.
