I apologize for my ignorance with personal security systems but is it true that Swann is highly-rated compared to other brands as far as easy install, quality video & friendly interface? & I thought they had another connection other than this PoE? I'm planning to get one of these sometime this year & would like to know if this specific 8-cam is a good choice for the price, Sites for references? TIA for your input.

How does this brand compare to Lorex? I'm in the market for a security system but have zero knowledge of this. Thanks

It's a decent system. For the money it's good, and a great starter system. After the warranty, you can upgrade firmware, at least on the NVR - if your technically apt, to Hikvision firmware. If you want hi-res 4K expect to spend double at a minimum. But there are caveats for 4K too such as frame rate recording.

This is rebranding of Hikvision cameras and NVR. I understand this model only supports 8 POE so for the other 8 ports you would need either a POE switch or POE injection.

I think Lorex is now rebranding Dahua, which is comparable. Firmware for Hikvision, as long as US branded, is constantly updated. If your tin hat, stay away. Major Chinese gov investment in Hikvision.

There's debates between NVR and Blue Iris. Both have their advantages. Going this route, you can battery backup the thing with like a 800va ups and should get decent run time.

With Blue Iris, you could battle CPU and optimization depending on number of camera. Dedicated NVR is almost set and forget. However, Blue Iris is much more flexible in terms of different make of cameras. There's a camera protocol, Onvif, to help with opening the platforms, but there's a lot of cameras that hit and miss there.

Bottom line, go Hikvision or Dahua for home or small office use. Otherwise you'll need a much bigger budget.

Does anyone know if the recordings can be sent to the cloud for safe keeping? I like that I can send it within seconds to my NAS and then the cloud by using Blue Iris. I can't do that with my Annke.

HI Adder, Seywhut,

Michael950 had some good points worth remembering.

Do not feel you need to jump on any Security Camera deal right now - as I have not seen anything which screams "Hurry - buy this deal right away before it goes away"

So do take some time to determine what you want from a security camera system.
Especially look closer at the ID distance notes in the wiki below.

Also, as micheal pointed out - spending a bit more can provide a better kit, so if you can afford it consider buying what works better for your needs ( as opposed to what is cheaper )

Check out wiki notes ( also good for giving you an idea of the sales which occurred last BF )
https://slickdeals.net/f/10731663-security-camera-security-camera-system-black-friday-2017-master-list

The main post here has the ID distance listing:
https://slickdeals.net/f/10409612-lorex-dahua-oem-6x-4k-8mp-security-camera-system-w-8-port-poe-ip-nvr-2tb-hdd-kit-at-costco-b-m-ymmv-for-799-99

and
https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/index/

Remember no kit will be perfect, however a wired setup with a NVR or VMS on a PC ( like Blue Iris ) will be far more reliable and cost effective compared to any cloud based camera kit sold today to consumers.

Hikvision does have a cloud options, like hikconnect for DynDNS. But VPN to home network is safest.

Also, there's a doorbell cam that, still needs refinement, but should/will connect to this DVR.

Hikvision Cloud Service (Ezviz / HikConnect)
See doorbell here:

I bought this on the other deal for $449. I got the upgraded NVR 7095. It has the 4TB HDD WD purple drive and all the ports are PoE from what I can tell. I don't have 16 PoE cameras, but I had 7 plugged in and ports 9-16 all powered up the camera. I even hit them up to see if I could get them to match the current price of $429 and they did! Still need to install them but it seems like a pretty solid deal.
