"Sticklers about the whole thing"? It's a recycling program, not entitlement to a 20% off coupon. Target is not a charity.

Target will not be re-selling the traded-in car seats; Waste Management will be recycling them.

Most likely, the trade-in is a motivator to get old car seats off the streets, so to speak (they have a safety life of just 10 years, as long as they aren't involved in a car crash).

The primary structural component of a car seat is plastic. It can and does degrade over time. Imagine what a car seat is exposed to in its time sitting in a car... temperatures well over 120 (can get up to 170 in very hot locations!), well below freezing, and direct UV sunlight. All of these things degrade plastic. The seat may look totally fine, but when it's stressed in an accident, it can literally disintegrate. I know everyone thinks "big car seat" is out to make a buck, but expiration dates are a real thing and should be adhered to. Some brands use higher-grade plastic that lasts a bit longer, but those seats tend to be more expensive.

We just recently upgraded my sons old car seat to the high back booster. Guess instead of tossing it, I can at least get the 20% coupon and maybe do a trade with someone.

Some ppl give away their seats after they are done but are you saying it has to be a current model seat they can resale?

Are these stackable coupons? I have 2 old carseats and can I get two 20%'s and use them to get a new one?

I was able to use the 20% coupon with the cartwheel app that gave me additional discount and my red card making my carseat purchase a very good deal. But this is after waiting for a sale on the carseat I was looking at. Even the cashier mention what a great deal I got with all the savings.
And yes, you have to physically bring in the carseat and drop it off at the customer service counter for the paper coupon.

Damn, I just disposed of of my daughter's old seat by leaving it in the trade in car last month. I figured with Babies R Us gone, no retailer will do trade in discounts anymore.

My state had a program that gave gift cards for free basic car seats through Toys R Us. If you had more than one kid, you could collect the gift cards and use them together on one purchase for a single top-of-the-line car seat.

But now that Toy R Us is gone, the program may be dead.

I think this is the third year Target has been doing this. Seems the recycling partner has changed. In any case, an excellent way to easily recycle a car seat. Most places you have to break down the seat to its core components to recycle it. I hope they do this again next year when it comes time to get rid of some again for me. Also for folks looking for a booster I recommend Graco Affix - one of the few boosters with latches. A great safety feature for grandparents, aunts, uncles who may only occasionally use a booster - it does not become another loose object to worry about in the car in case of collisions. Also holds seat in place when there is a child sitting in it.
