New Router with DDWRT/tomato support?

620 141 April 18, 2018 at 10:47 AM
I think my Netgear WNR2000v2 running Tomato is dying. It can barely keeps a wifi connection and I Have to reboot it everyday for it to really work.

I really like tomato, as I can secure it with OpenVPN, keep web usage logs and more... so I am hoping to find a good deal in the next few weeks on a new router. Also, I am currently in a 600 Sq ft apartment, however I am currently househunting for a 2-3 br house (~1200 sq ft I would say). so figure I would want to get a DDWRT/tomato router that can accommodate my new house whenever I find the right one to buy this year.

I did a quick search for ddwrt and nothing much popped up on SD. So unsure how to find the best deals for routers with these custom OSs

Look at the TP-Link Archer C9. This used to be a fairly top-of-the-line router and the price has come down substantially over the last year or so. Unless you are doing heavy duty gaming or have ridiculous gigabit+ Internet speeds this should be more than enough. It is Broadcomm and supports DD–WRT very well although I can't speak firsthand for Tomato. It covers three floors (wood/drywall) and 4000 sqft. very nicely placed in the middle of the 2nd floor.
