It looks like this cant detect the center of a stud.

$18 is too much for this old style of stud finder. I'd either go cheaper and use a magnetic option (often under $5) to find the drywall screws/nails or a little more expensive and get the Franklin or Precision brand (often under $30) with the LED lights that show exactly where the stud is.

I second this. I bought a franklin brand one and was amazed how well those work. You not only detect a stud it shows the size (both edges). It seem to work well so far.
