Will energy companies honor thermostat rebates for units bought on eBay?

19 10 April 19, 2018 at 07:07 AM
The nest and ecobee thermostats are considerably cheaper on eBay, even new and sealed. Has anyone successfully gotten an energy company rebate using an eBay invoice as proof of purchase?

Additional details: I'm in NY and National Grid is offering $75 for gas customers who install a wifi enabled thermostat. I looked at the rebate form and aside from the obvious personal and account info, it asks for a copy of the invoice/receipt and the UPC from the box.

Any thoughts?

I'm wondering the same thing for ConEd (ConEdison) NYC. $50 rebate. Rebate application can be completed online.

I didn't try it. I found a deal on a Nest E and got the rebate for that one. But I was too chicken to spend the money on the Nest 3rd Gen without being sure I'd get the rebate. If I do decide to try, I'll post the results then.

I think you're OK as long as it's listed on the NY ConEd Marketplace site. FYI, I got screwed and didn't get a rebate for my Lowes Iris Radio Thermostat CT101. But eBay was NOT the reason. ConEd said it's not WiFi connected.

Any update? If it worked for you please let others know. That way we can all save and use less resources. Without an answer this whole post is useless.
