Alternatively Amazon [amazon.com] has Rokinon 12mm F2.0 NCS CS Ultra Wide Angle Lens Sony E-Mount Black on sale for $260. Shipping is free

This is a great little lens for APS-C sized cameras! I mainly use it for astro-photography!

FYI: This is for cropped / APS-C sensor size only (like A6500, 6300, 6000, NEX-7, Nex-5,...)

NOT suitable for Full Frame like A9 or A7 series. Yes, you still can mount it on your A9/A7's and take pictures but you either have 4 big ole black corners or your camera automatically switches to APS-C mode, which destroys the purpose of having a Full Frame.

I have this lens for my A6300. While it (or any other lens, really) can be used for portraits of kids, it seems unlikely to me that this would be the most appropriate lens in your bag for those shots. The ultra-wide perspective is not flattering on faces and I prefer the kit lens at 16mm over this lens if you need a very wide environmental portrait.

Regarding your concern about autofocus: where this lens excels, as others have mentioned, is the very deep depth of field so the need to autofocus likely won't be a dealbreaker if you do a little research on how to set focus. Focused at the hyperfocal distance at f/4 (6 feet), everything will be in acceptable focus from 3' to infinity. So if you're using this lens to shoot kids sports, as long as they're moving at least 3 feet in front of the camera, you'll be in focus. Furthermore, once you setup the focal distance properly, you never really need to change focus again for the main types of things you'd probably want to photograph with this lens (architecture, landscapes, astro, etc.). Here's a link that includes a depth of field map which tells you the correct hyperfocal distances to focus at for each f-stop to maximize the depth of field: http://peterfraileyphoto.blogspot...dible.html

With that said, this lens is a special-purpose one for me as I don't shoot all that much landscape, architecture, or astro. I primarily take pictures of my family and the need to switch lenses for an ultra-wide shot, only to switch back to another lens immediately which is more suitable for portraits, is not convenient.

I bought this lens used during an eBay 20% off sale for $125 -- at that price, it was a no-brainer, but I probably wouldn't buy it for $230 since I don't use it much. I've also seen it a little cheaper around black friday or during the eBay 15-20% off sales that come up from time to time, but it's hard to put a price on the pictures you'd shoot in the meanwhile. It's a good, compact, sharp ultra-wide lens with minor issues that can easily be addressed in post, but you may want to pass on it if you don't know why you need one.

The silver version [amazon.com] is only $234.00

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K3T3...B00JD4TAWI

Alternatively, the black one on BHPhoto [bhphotovideo.com] is $289.00 but no tax for most and also you'll get 2% reward from BH to use later.

About to pull the trigger on the black version. Anyone know the non-sale price these usually go for? And where does $260 fall in terms of lowest price these go down to?

CCC says it usually goes for around $300 last year and this year its always been at $275 so this is a good deal.

Great deal on a great lens! I have the Samyang version of this one - currently my only lens for my A6000, and I love it.

Is Rokinon and Samyang the same company? Just googled and it's confusing. It sounds like the glass is from the same company but the lens bodies vary by brand... https://www.slrlounge.com/rokinon...ty-review/

Yes. Samyang Optics manufactures and markets under both brands, as well as others.

Note that this doesn't take advantage of camera auto focus and you'll have to do it manually. Not a big deal for some people but for others it will be. Everything I've seen about this lens says it takes amazing pictures.

"They are the same exact lens. Samyang is the one who makes the lenses. Samyang/Rokinon/Wallimex etc are subsidiaries of Elite Brands as far as I know. Rokinon is Samyang's North Amerian "reseller". I guess the subsidiaries decide on their own sales and promotional periods, so prices fluctuate. Sometimes lenses with "Samyang" printed on them are cheaper, and sometimes Rokinon-branded versions are cheaper. But they are made by the same company in the same factories to the same specifications."

This is a manual lens only, correct.
