Amazon has the Onkyo HT-S7800 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Home Theater Package for $599.00 with free Prime shipping. Original price was $974.98. Been waiting for this system to come down because it seems like it has some of the best bang for your buck if you're looking for a complete Dolby Atmos solution. Either way, go easy on me because it's my first post. Thanks

I've been out of the theater game so long half of this is Greek to me. But, I'm moving into a new house this week and it has Theater room in the basement. I'm gonna do a projector and screen... So this setup feels like it would work great.

Someone guide meeeee... Lol

I got this system in Aug 2017 when it was a deal at $679.01. Great system for me, not a huge audiophile by any means, but it sounds great. The sub is decent enough, the biggest gripe from most is that the sub is the weak point in the system but it's got enough bass for me. You'll be surprised how big the FR and FL speakers are, they also have up firing Atmos speakers on them which is nice, too.

Also, toss the supplied wire they provide in the trash, it's super flimsy and you can do alot better with legit speaker wire.

Last comment and then I'm out...I also liked that this unit has dual HDMI out. You can set to send signal out to the Main HDMI out, the Sub HDMI out or a combination of Main + Sub HDMI out. We have a dual tv setup in our game room, so this was perfect.

The "with speaker wire" option being 10$ more, assumedly that is the better wiring?

That might be an Amazon bundle, better to confirm w/ a chat rep. When I got it last year there was color coded flimsy speaker wire, provided by Onkyo already in the box. I had heard from others that it wasn't great so I tossed that I got my own spool.

This seemed to be automatically bundled by Amazon with the home theater package for an extra $10 (total $609), presumably because the included wire in the package was so flimsy.

Oh, for the days of Onkyo refurbs. Got the HT-S7100 7.1 for $480 in '08, just upgraded the receiver to a 656 with a SD.

I bought the previous gen S7700 over a year ago for around $700, so this is a pretty slick deal at $600. Should go FP soon. I love mine. Dolby Atmos makes a huge difference. The sound is excellent for movies. For music, it's only above average. Hopefully, that has improved with this newer gen. Highly recommend if you use this mostly for movies. If you also want this for music also, try to check it out at your local store first. Perhaps, other current owners can also chime in?

For the price wouldn't it be better building your own? Like from Polk, JBL or Klipsch

It wouldn't be possible to build a 5.1.2 system using separate parts for that price including the receiver. Also, the upfiring speakers are integrated into the front speakers which makes it more compact which was important for my apartment setup. There aren't many speakers that have that capability and the ones that do start at $499/pair (although I'm sure they're much better).

3 known weaknesses
- amp is very entry level
- subwoofer is very bad and imprecise
- in box wires sucked

Good deal if you invest a bit more
- monoprices wires
- refurbished Elac, Bic or SVS subwoofer
- keep the amp and dont think that better ones exists

Then you are close to an entry level DIY atmos system.

This is niche to me. Either you go soundbar or you spend 1k and get a real atmos entry level setup. Elac or pioneer speakers with a Denon x3400 for instance. You can get that for $1000 or go Polk/ Klipsch if a good deal shows up but that it tougher to get under $1000

Is it required to have a tv that is compatible with atmos in order to hook up to this reciever?
