Dental Work - Steep (~67%) Discounts at Yuma, AZ border town - RUMO Dental Group

Without dental insurance, I had deferred lots of dental work because I felt it was too expensive to have it done in the USA. I was thinking of going to Hungary, but while I was pondering that "dental tourism" trip...

My new girlfriend lives in Phoenix, and she had traveled with her son (who needed 4 root canals and 5 crowns) to Los Algodones, Mexico. It's right across the border from Winterhaven, CA, which is a suburb of Yuma, AZ.

She already knew the drill (no pun intended) and had a great experience there and saved a ton of $$. So I had a free cleaning/exam with a dentist in Scottsdale to get an idea of what I was up against--turns out, their cost estimate was well over $25,000!

We got all of the following done over a 3-day weekend with Rumo Dental Group (would have taken MONTHS in the USA with a typical dentist, especially with referrals to endodontists and so forth)

http://rumodentalgroup.com/
or
https://www.algodones.mx/rumo-den...ity/14356/

We paid the following (you may have a slight YMMV) and we'll put typical USA pricing in parentheses, also:

$1,000 ($3,000) Implant
100 (300-600) Extraction
300 (1,000+) Root Canal
400 (1,200-1,400) Crowns
200 (850) Abutment for Implant Crowns
150 (1,000-1,200) Deep Cleaning (scaling)

Basically, everything was 1/3 of the price or less (posts, build-ups, fillings).

This entire little border town is geared toward medical/dental tourism (vision, dermatology, but DENTAL is #1 because it's so expensive in the USA and more people are without vision and dental insurance).

It's clean, safe, modern, professional, and just about everyone speaks excellent English. You park your car in a secure lot for $6/day and walk two short blocks to the clinic upon crossing the border. You will need a passport or other approved crossing documents (Nexus, etc.).

Why RUMO? Because we went there, both dentists have specialized skills (perfect compliment to each other--Dr. Ruiz does extractions, implants, ortho, and more general dentistry and Dr. Morales handles root canals) and had the following in 2.5 days with NO PAIN, just some soreness:

3 extractions
3 implants (including bone grafts)
2 root canals
4 crowns
1 deep cleaning
3 posts & build-ups
40 x-rays (they check EVERYTHING as they go, so no surprises)

$4,850 TOTAL

We'll go back and get my abutments and crowns for the implants ($1,650 total since we were given a discount on the above prices as a "volume" courtesy) in 4 months, but everything else was done in 2.5 days!

This town is super efficient when it comes to dental. They bicycle courier the crown molds to the lab a few blocks away, and completed crowns were delivered to my dentist that afternoon. Then after fitting and some fine-tuning they had to be re-polished while my teeth were being cleaned--so they were couriered BACK to the lab for final polishing and returned about 40 minutes later. It's like a well-oiled machine--talk about customer service!

It's like having a private dentist AND lab.

Also, we never felt like a number. The service is much more personalized than in the USA or at a larger clinic.

PM me if you want more info. They also have a US phone number on their website, or you can email them.

There are many videos on YouTube about Algodones Mexico. Here are some links:

Algodones Mexico has the highest concentration of Dentists in the world in a mere 4-6 block section. You will need passport or passport card to get back in the US. You can only bring 90 days prescriptions back, do not load-up on medications.

There is NOTHING sketchy about it. I've been a member here for years with almost 1,000 reps and just saved over $15,000 on my dental work. Please specify what is sketchy about it and detail your concerns.

Who are you and what are you doing for the community, btw?

Those TDing this with "other" are not "protecting" anyone. If you have some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, please post it and let's discuss it. But "it's sketchy" is total garbage without substantiation.

The negativity on display here is really disappointing (and it's grown over the years). I can prove that I live in the PNW, have no affiliation with these dentists, and produce my receipts. <smh>

Not at all sketchy, and OP very unlikely getting ripped off. Though no personal experience with Remo group, Algodones is an excellent place to have dental work done. The profession there is mature, and generally both well trained and equipped. While I wouldn't doubt the possibility of some less desirable dentists/offices, there are easy ways to determine most of their reputations. And the expenses are pretty much in line with the OP's observations. Other than perhaps travel, there is really very little downside to having dental work done there.

Don't know about this place, but dental schools are a good place and probably safer to get cheap work done.

I love this

"Our 15 day all smiles warranty: If any of our work fails within 15 days of your visit, we will refund labor costs or fix it free, at our discretion!"

"Note that if you opt for sedation dentistry, you may be unconscious during your procedure. We suggest you dress accordingly."

flyboyy10 is correct. We did lots of web searching before taking the 3-hour trip from Phoenix. Here are a few links we uncovered:

Implants run $3,000-5,000 per tooth including the post and crown. That's incredibly common in the US.

You don't have implants done at the local dental school. Sure, I'd let some kid in school do a filling, but an implant? There is a point where you cross the line from being frugal to stupid. The same is true trying to find "an adequate dentist" who accepts some third rate dental plan.

Lastly, even if you have good and standard dental insurance, as I do, the plan has a maximum payout of $2,000 per year! You are not getting a bunch of extractions, implants, and crowns done without a lot of out of pocket expenses.

I've got a lot of work to get done myself, and I know my outlay is going to be in the $20,000-25,000 range if I get it done here in Louisiana where my dentist really works with me to reduce my costs.

I've been researching going to Los Algondes myself, and really appreciate the write up and review from the OP.

Similar savings with dental clinics in Nogales, Sonora which is at the border with Nogales, Arizona, about an hour south of Tucson.

The clinics are usually better equipped than dentists in the U.S. which are single dentist offices without a lot of ability to handle anything but fillings. Everyone is a specialist on the American side, But the quality and efficiency of the border clinics make them very attractive. The better places even take U.S. insurance, making their prices about a fourth, or less, of anything up north. .

lol. those "typical prices" are grossly inflated.

for example: $1k for a root canal? wtf? more like $500-$700 (for a cash patient_. But it's much less if you're smart enough to buy a dental plan for a month or two. here's one for $18.95/mo.

root canal: $140....for a molar (I had this plan & paid $140)

deep cleaning: $160 (full mouth) (I paid $200, since my dentist added $40 for some scam irrigation)

(To be fair, when FW was alive, some moron mentioned that he had paid $1.2k for full-mouth deep cleaning. But that's just bizarre. As a cash patient, I paid $400 one time....for multiple visits. Another time, my gums weren't nearly as jacked. So I paid $280).

extraction: $10-$50

crown (molar) $236 + cost of gold (so likely about $400 now, although I paid $350 or so)

xrays: free

https://www.caldental.net/salesPl.../plansInfo

it's plan 595.

(of course, you may have to put some effort into finding an adequate dentist who takes that plan. also have to watch out for scammers who don't follow the plan's actual co-pays Smilie )

there's a good, OC-based dentist who does a complete molar implant for $1.5k, although I doubt that includes a bone graft. for that, add $300-$500. (lol @ $3k. that's a price for morons/wealthy)
Plan 595:

"The plan will cover 30% of the specialist?s fees during the first year of enrollment and 50% thereafter, for up to $1000 in services per year."

Oh, the fine print... it's always a killer, isn't it? $1,000 doesn't even come close to covering ONE implant!

Those are VERY typical prices that we've posted, and those were incredibly similar to the quotes that we've gotten from close friends who've been given dental estimates as well, paying CASH.

You should post the references for the dentists offering your great price quotes instead of being snarky maybe... Give us a chance to call them and verify--just as we have.

The intent of our post was to alert SDers that there are viable dental options in North America that could possibly save them thousands.

Most insurance isn't very good and always looking to deny. We prefer to skip the monthly payments and pay as we go, but that's us...
