Does anyone believe (hope) that the recent resurgeance of classic gaming will inspire developers to create next generation classics or games with similar play and presentation? By this, I mean entertaining but less involved games that can be played in short sessions but also leaving the player with some sense of accomplishment. I know that I could create a list of recent games but they seem to be sparse and intermittent. BTW: I mostly game on XB1.

Maybe it's my age (40's) or other competing interests but I seem to be less and less entertained by next generation games. As a life long gamer that just feels odd. Graphics and mechanics are great but I seem to have to force myself to play long enough so I become motivated to continue. After that, I look back with guilt having wasted so much time on a game.

As therapy, I ordered Retro-cade and am looking forward to the nostalgia. However, I'd love to see more arcade type games using new hardware. I suppose the Nintendo Switch may be the closest to this but I have not played it yet.

Oops on the redundant title. Blame the smartphone.

Try new experiences. I'm into VR now. It's like playing games all over for the 1st time. You have to recreate real actions to do what you want, ie if you want to pick something up you have to literally reach for it, grab it, and now you're holding it. There's some crazy good VR games. Only thing is you'll need a decent computer and a VR headset, if you don't have one it will set you back a bit.

Most recent reason why everyone should be armed at all times:
Santa Fe, TX school shooting. 10 killed 10 wounded.
This was a gun free zone. The shooter didn't care. Gun free zones only hurt honest citizens. If someone was armed there could've been 1 less death.

I got the Switch for this reason alone. A few AAA & indie titles have kept me interested so it's worth the money already. More games to come will keep me busy in the future.

As far as retro gaming goes, I'm hoping Nintendo will bring in virtual console. I'd like to revisit Mario 64, a few NES & SNES titles too. It'll be perfect for a portable handheld like the Switch. But I don't see it happening since I believe it'll cannibalize their indie games/developers. But I still have hope.

What I'd also like to see is for Konami to get their shit together. Some of my favorite game franchise was Contra, Gradius, Castlevania & TMNT. I've been waiting years for sequels to these franchise but that'll never happen.

Mario Odyssey fits the bill.

Pick up a PS4 to supplement your Xbox gaming. There are exclusives which you could be missing out on. You didn't specify the type of games that you play but there are tons of free to play or pay to win games on Xbox (and other consoles).

Infamous: Second Son is a great game although it's PS4 only. Horizon Zero Dawn and the new God of War are must play on PS4 only. The Uncharted series is also highly rated.

Upcoming games that old & new gamers should be looking forward to:
Red Dead Redemption 2
another Tomb Raider game
another Battlefield or Call of Duty in the Fall
sports games like FIFA & Madden come out every year

As for shorter games, get a tablet: Android or Apple based, there's tons of casual friendly games that fit your criteria of short session gaming.

As an old school gamer myself 29. I have just moved on. Period.
The PS4 Pro is too weak not even offering 4K Blu-ray and horsepower is poor.
The Xbox One X has no games period. (Everything is available on PC)
When I read that Halo 6 And Gears Of War 5 we're coming to PC I sold my Xbox One S.
Nintendo offers Nostaligia and the SNES Classic can be modded to play amazing games.
And on PC I can play all the best GameCube and Wii games.

So I'm down to a Gaming PC. And a SNES Classic and a Switch.
Currently Replaying @ 1440p at 144hz at Ultra Settings
Arkham Knight
Fallout 4 GOTY
Mortal Kombat XL
Diablo 3
Doom
GTA V SweetFX Mod
Starcraft 2
Playing on PC at 144hz is a game changer (pun intended) I can't stress enough. A good Gaming Monitor is also needed something consoles can't offer.

And VR has a long way to go it's a fun demo. After Nintendo tackles VR and perfects motion controls. It will be ready

Have you tried an Oculus Rift or Vive? It's not just a demo.

Tried the Pimax 8K VR headset IMO 4K would be a sweet spot but the Pimax 8K has a 200 degree FOV and that's what Current VR headsets are missing.

Tried Omni directional treadmill. And the Microsoft HoloLens.

The HTC VIVE Pro is currently the best available on the market but there are new controllers and cameras with lower latency coming soon. So there's no point I Buying it now.

Lastly the games only one I have enjoyed is Arizona Sunshine.
VR needs a solid Flight SIM, Ace Combat Hybrid nothing like flying an F-18 off the deck of an aircraft carrier into combat. But it has to strike a balance between Fun and Simulation.

Totally agree, PC Gaming is the way to go. I'd rather max out a system with a new $1,000 graphics card every year than be restricted to low level graphics depth and framerates for four years while Sony and Microsoft squeeze every penny out of their hardware platforms.
Have you seen the YouTube videos of PC vs. PS4/XBOX on the same title? Console gamers don't even know they're handicapped 😁

You never let us know what types of games you actually enjoy, so it's a little difficult for us to recommend alternatives or empathize with your situation. If you can let us know what genre at least then we can help.
