ALERT As of May 2, 4PM Frozen gift cards seem to be functional again.
Over the last week, many people trying to check Staples gift card balance online or by phone are finding they get the message: invalid information entered or card is expired or inactive. Even worse, the cards do not work in-store or online.
If you talk to a telephone representative of Blackhawk, which issues the cards, they will tell you that the funds are frozen, supposedly because of a technical problem. For the last week, they have been saying try again tomorrow, but it is getting ridiculous that they seemingly have no procedure or timeline for rapidly resolving this problem, which is preventing use of the gift cards.
To try and identify the dimensions of this problem, if you are impacted, please post the source from where you purchased your affected Staples gift card/s and approximate purchase date/s.

So far, no one has reported problems with Staples rebates or refunds ("cash card") issued in form of gift card.

It has been like that since a week or so ago. I have contacted Staples and they are saying they know the issue but it would take time to fix it.
