PSA Many Staples Gift Cards Frozen

+8 Deal Score

ALERT As of May 2, 4PM Frozen gift cards seem to be functional again.

Over the last week, many people trying to check Staples gift card balance online or by phone are finding they get the message: invalid information entered or card is expired or inactive. Even worse, the cards do not work in-store or online.

If you talk to a telephone representative of Blackhawk, which issues the cards, they will tell you that the funds are frozen, supposedly because of a technical problem. For the last week, they have been saying try again tomorrow, but it is getting ridiculous that they seemingly have no procedure or timeline for rapidly resolving this problem, which is preventing use of the gift cards.

To try and identify the dimensions of this problem, if you are impacted, please post the source from where you purchased your affected Staples gift card/s and approximate purchase date/s.

It has been like that since a week or so ago. I have contacted Staples and they are saying they know the issue but it would take time to fix it.

what is the "Office of President's" website? Maybe complaining will help, since staples has the most to lose in terms of sales. They can put pressure to their partner blackhawk to fix their system.

I tried using one in a store Friday night ... to no avail. But the manager on duty knew I spent a lot of $$$ there, so she went ahead and gave me a $25 credit (value of the card).

If the card retains its value, I'll be very happy.

I can check balance for two of mine ($20 each post-loaded) bought instore on March 2nd, but fail for those (3x$10 pre-loaded) bought in a different store on March 8th. I can also check balance for a GC that was given as a refund for my return. I can't check other GCs that were bought from others sources with a pre-set initial value. From my limited data, my hypothesis is the balance checking link is now only working for GCs without a pre-set value.

Simply not true. Staples WAS good. But after it stops rebates, OD has more deals. Staples has NONE.

Your theory may be correct. I tried on many occasions the last few days and none of my preset cards worked. I mentioned the problem to one cashier and she said it worked for another customer. She showed me the card and it was a standard card issued for returns.
