Does anyone know if the traffic receiver is in the unit or the cable?

I get weary of "lifetime" now... What if Garmin goes out of business a month from now? Not sure how they're still in business tbh.

For a few reasons no - limited service, long trips, not wanting to kill your phone battery or leaving it in the sun under the windshield

Well, I have to agree with you that smartphone would be much better than GPS if you need to call someone... Now try to create a trip with 10+ stops, and ability to change your route on the go, etc, and let us know what's better.

There is an entire commercial vehicle industry that uses Garmin or conventional GPS units. I bought one for long trips as it's easier to see and doesn't require me tying up my phone.

As far as lifetime updates, it's just like anything else. If the company goes out of business, you are screwed.

Mods should make a sticky(if there isn't already) regarding deals for standalone GPS. The same statements and questions keep getting asked. GPS this... smartphone that.

Can this be used outside of U.S? Wondering if I could bring this to Asia and use it.

sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone.
i have both. i used Magellan gps about 7-8 years ago, and after i got my first smartphone 4 yrs ago or so, i never used my gps again. i've been traveling coast to coast couple of times, and had many interstate drives, with multiple stops, and never once used the gps (after using the smartphone).
but every situation is different.
again, didn't mean to offend

This makes sense to everybody who has used Google maps on their phone but never owned a modern GPS.

Even if you're not going through rural areas where reception is an issue I prefer to have my phone free to do all those other things and not miss any turns. It shows current speed and I can't justify it but it's more convenient than looking down at the dash all the time (no HUD my rides.)

I've got the Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S and my only complaint is it tries to be my smartphone. You can turn off the phone call feature but "Smart services"' includes the traffic app and gets you text notifications.
