Yes, it is perfect for that task and will in fact excel.

you'll want to buy a set of ram that matches the voltage and speed of the ram already in the system unless you just buy a new 2x8gb set. mixing ram speeds and voltage is potentially dangerous. preferably, you'd want to buy the same brand that the system comes with.

Depending on your usage you're probably not going to notice much of a difference.
As previously stated AMD Ryzen will beat intel at multi threaded tasks and has more cores, the comparably priced intel will do better at gaming, and has a higher clock speed.
(8 cores on the AMD, 4 or 6 on comparable intel processors)

Yes, it is. For Productivity and Multi-threaded workloads, Ryzen 7 1700 still can kick ass of i7-8700/K. For gaming, just add a good CPU Cooler and overclock it a bit to get over 60 FPS for almost every games.

Wow the best deal I've seen so far this year. Only thing missing is 16gb. But hey a Ssd and hd, plus 8gb 1070, and a 8 core 1700. So tempting

I'm thinking of this for Elite Dangerous in VR, but this would be my first ever gaming rig. Thoughts?
