Do not buy any Bestbuy Gift Card, because the balance can become zero before you use it

I got two gift cards on 1/29/2016. I kept the cards in a safe place at home for the last two years and never had a chance to use it.
Last week I went to store and was told the card balance was zero. The card never should expire.
Store employee printed out the card transaction history.
The cards were used to make purchase at 1:51am Saturday on 2/13/2016 at Bestbuy online.
Bestbuy customer supports asked me to contact headquarter and I contacted three times and was told to contact local law enforcement. I called police department and I emailed the card transaction history. Police department contacted Bestbuy customer support twice and was hang up without any luck talking to anyone. Police department asked me to call Bestbuy headquarter for help and told me there is nothing they can help.
I called headquarter again and was told about the term and condition. Bestbuy is not responsible for any stolen card or lost card and will not recover any loss if the card balance is zero. Wells, my card was not stolen or lost. the pin# was never scratched off until the store employee removed the cover for me.
I goodle search and found many people had the same issue.
Does anyone have any luck any one back from Bestbuy? The gift cards had $120 balance when I received it.

This isn't the right spot for rambling complaints...

Sorry this happened to you, but generally speaking two plus years is a long time to hold a gift card. I deal with a lot of gift cards, and Best Buy actually has one of the better reputations out there as far as gift card fraud prevention goes. If you would have caught that it had been drained earlier, Best Buy most likely would have been much more willing to work with you. Also, Best Buy in store is one of the few merchants that allows you to buy gift cards with gift cards, so you can always exchange it for a better brand like eBay, Nike, etc if you didn't plan to use it for a while.

So, I would change the title of your post from "Do not buy any Bestbuy Gift Card..." to "Do not buy any Gift Card and let it sit in a drawer for years...".

Some time ago? People first started reporting problems with gift card conversions at Best Buy less than two weeks ago, previously it was not a problem at all. It's still a YMMV thing, I did it myself last week, but it is true that it may be coming to an end.

The card balance became zero two weeks after it was issued. It does not matter whether I found it out whether two weeks later or 5 years later. The problem is the attitude from BestBuy that it is not BestBuy fault and it is consumer's fault.
I am not complaining here. But if this happens to you, then it is your fault because you did not listen to this post. I hope to prevent this from happening to other people.

Involving the law enforcement over $120? And they actually tried to help you by calling BB on your behalf ?
Take them to small claims , file with AG but let the cops out of it . They need to handle serious problems/crimes not $120 petty BB GC issue

I don't know why people keep saying that. Unless my two local Best Buy
stores are not company policy?

Just yesterday after noon, I used my $50 Best Buy gift card to purchase a
BP gasoline gift card at the nearest Best Buy store. There were no issues.
The employee scanned the BP gasoline card and I handed her the Best
Buy gift card. The receipt printed out and I left the store. (the BP gasoline
card was used about an hour later, but $50 was only enough to fill my car
to aless than 3/4 full)

Good for you. People keep saying this from their personal experience. Kind of hard to believe, but possibly not all stores' machines are updated at the same time.

I remember when I could easily convent Target GCs to eBay GCs at self checkout while other people reported the machine already blocked them for months.

yeah... the #1 that bugs me is how companies don't follow their own policy consistently. Frown
