You generally don't need 8 cores/16 threads for almost anything unless you're doing a specific process/program that requires it like blender, davinci resolve, etc. VERY few games can make use of that many cores or threads and they are far more reliant higher clock speeds.

The 2600x is better for gaming and most processes due to its much higher base speed (3.6 vs 3.0) and its turbo speed (4.2 vs 3.7). You can also game and stream on it at the same time if you intend to do 264 encoding, though I usually recommend NVENC encoding via your GPU if you have a more up to date GPU.

I wanted to build one using one of these Ryzen cpus but the ram prices are keeping me at the bay.

Most likely it will stay at that price for some time from RefurbforLess. I'd wait for some eBay cash back offer or % discount.

Hmm. I think the core count craze got the best of me. Got a 2700. Not even an X. This 2600x is prob better for what I do. Will think about returning and getting this.
