theres a $45 resort fee per person at venetian per day

Palazzo and Venetian now charge $45 daily resort fees, the highest in Las Vegas

The Venetian and the Palazzo reservation websites show the new resort fees that jumped from $39. The increase took effect March 6.
Until the latest increase, the two properties were in line with many other high-end resorts. The daily fee remains $39 at Aria, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Mandarin Oriental and Wynn.

prices per night are about $100-150 more than other hotels

I'm actually staying palazzo now and I was charge 50.02 for the resort fee per night. I guess it's $45+tax to be specific. The good thing is they havent charged parking fee as other hotel have.

Well to be fair, this one does seem pretty weak. Venetian/Palazzo very often offers 3rd night free, which is going to be at least as good as this.

We are going to vegas for the first time for 3 nights/4 days and are a little overwhelmed with hotel choices. Any recommendations for a first time visitor?

Depends on budget and what's on your list of things to do like eat at certain places, see certain shows and/or see all the "free" entertainment like shows in front of the hotel (get schedule in advance) or go downtown for the entertainment there. Downtown crowd and vide tend to be more relaxed. You will be walking A Lot so bring comfortable walking shoes or slippers. Las Vegas blocks are yuge! On the budget side of the strip, there is the Cromwell, casino royale and linq (formerly Imperial Palace and remodeled). These are more central than circus circus but that will do too. Haven't paid full fare for hotels in a long time but from what I remember, these were in the bottom end of the price curve with great locations. Hope this helps.

I just stayed at The Cosmopolitan over Easter weekend and do not think I would be able to stay anywhere else on my future trips. The customer service, rooms, restaurants/bars and casino was all amazing there.

Aria and the Cosmo are my top choices, but everything is pretty expensive at these two properties. Checkout mycheapvegas.com UN: slick PW:deals for the best rates and promotions.

Also, check out this thread below for a great deal on MGM properties.
