Yes, when you activate the box use their "no credit card" page

https://my.roku.com/signup/nocc

There is still lots of free stuff on Roku

Roku has the benefit of being content agnostic, you can watch Amazon and Google content on it, but other than that the differences aren't huge, most of them are just preference. The Fire is probably a little better than the Roku for playing Amazon content, I know the Roku's Amazon app isn't great.

You won't be able to use paid channels (like Netflix, etc) but there is still lots of free stuff on Roku
That's not true. Billing for the paid services are completely separate from roku.

There are a lot of services out there but I prefer the roku because it's one of the best ways to watch hockey. I can't install the NHL app cleanly on my android devices, or my Amazon devices. Chromecast is okay, but I still prefer the NHL app on the roku. Also I'm a big fan of some of the roku "hidden" channels

I believe that if you enter a credit card at registration it's only for the fandango service which is part of the roku os.

You really should try both the Fire and a Roku at your friends homes.

Fire is very slick, and you can run Kodi on it, but Roku gets my vote. Tons of free Roku channels (including the Roku channel itself which is very good), and it just works without giving me problems that the Fire does sometimes. Plus, my 2 old Fire's won't run Vudu at all even after side loading the app. So I can't watch any TV series that I've purchased on Vudu.

So now I'm searching for another Roku device. Not interested in another Fire.

I had one of these for maybe a year and just recently went to the Nvidia shield TV, please do yourself a favor and go straight to the shield.

Looks like these repost allegations are from an expired post over 3 months ago. Thanks though future moderator.

I only hope more people were able to take advantage of this deal, that is my only reason for ever posting on this site. If I ever get rich in rep points I will donate them to the those poor SD's who feel the need for love. Thanks again! 💰

I have a bunch of ftvs and sticks and rokus on all of my tvs.

Now I'm looking for a device that plays all 4k file formats like mkv, isos, etc via usb from a large exfat/ntfs hd... don't wanna stream via plex or anything similar.
