Spoken like a true cheapskate! $10 a month is Penny's to have a full blown service like nest that could potentially solve a serious crime. The convenience and quality it bring s is worth something. You want free, go wire up your own system and house the videos on your own server.

There is a fee for every camera, 1 camera won't do much to cover my property, so I, like many, would need several. That's several hundred dollars a year in fees. Hardly "cheapskate", but this is a deal site so not sure how it's any surprise "cheapskates" are on here.

Many people don't know about the monthly fee (read some reviews) and are quite upset about it, i don't see why that's not worthy information to tell people about. You're not just buying a camera, you're buying an obligation for a monthly fee to get any value from your product.

Ouch dealgrabber, ouch.

You can just as easily put up a wifi + wired to power camera which has local microSD card storage and skip on any additional cabling to get the potential to solve a serious crime.

Honestly, it's not really fair to attack people who do not want to pay recurring fees for what amounts to a leased product.

Hi DealJunkie,

I think it is completely fair to point out the downside as well as the upsides of products and services.

Completely agree that few people really know much about what they are getting.

Nest is basically a LEASED cloud dependent camera. You pay a high up front cost, and then a monthly fee.

As a cloud dependent product it will be less reliable compared to a wired on-prem solution.

Spoken like a true Dumb a$$
yes $10 is not a big deal but everything these days is $10 a month
Netflix HBO Go, Spodify, Google Play, Youtube RED, etc etc etc...
It adds up a month for the rest of your life.
only someone that lives paycheck to paycheck thinks $10 a month is not that big a deal

I have 8 nest cam 3 nest out door 3 nest thermostats 4 nest protects each casmerta is $10 month times 12 cameras you do the math

HI Dealgrabber1,

What happens when the internet goes out for you with a cloud camera?

Having owned and used Arlo cameras for over 8 months - experienced no issues with thieves stealing the cameras - yet every day and night I had video captures of delinquents coming and going in and out of the drug den adjacent to me AND these were cameras just held on with a magnet.

With a good outdoor wifi + wired to power camera which has a local on camera microSD card, you can easily mount the camera in such a fashion with longer screws / anchors to make it a challenge to remove.
( I'm using wifi + wired to power non--cloud dependent camera as a comparison to the Nest Cameras which are wifi + wired to power cloud dependent )

You may also mitigate camera theft issues by sending snapshots to the cloud or your email, as well as many cameras further supporting NAS, FTP, and NVR storage.

A good on-prem cameras does not mean you do not have the option to send video clips to the cloud.

Hi znigma,

It is possible to actually get both a more affordable and fully featured setup than a Nest cloud based camera.

I'm not knocking it per se, I'm pointing out this has a monthly fee which many don't realize. Secondly, I can afford it, but if i bought everything i could afford I'd end up broke
